Yeah well we dont take keys anyway we demand drivers uncouple from the trailer
IMHO that’s the best and safest way, apart form the demand bit.
You have the trailer and I have my unit. sorted.

The safest way is to let the driver at the dock, then watch FLD’s tip your trailer in 15 mins!!! But that ain’t ganna happen is it?
in my new job they are actually pleased to see me,i get tipped straight away and can use their canteen. i am never asked for my keys etc. if i do have to phone the rdc i am asked what time i will arrive so arrangments can be made if ness.
i like this job

Aye, I certainly agree there. As long as I can stay in the cab wherever I’m sent to park. Once I’ve been to the canteen and used the bog of course (Unless Mr Vain brings his idea to fruition… or is that the wrong term!
)

Speaking as a H & S union rep. there is a simple but (for the companies concerned) expensive failsafe system of stopping “driveoffs” from loading bays etc.
It is where the loading bay has a sliding arm that is activated by the warehouse staff and actively acts like a chock in front of the rear axle of the vehicle effectively blocking movement of the said vehicle.
But as always the companies take the cheaper option of asking for the keys to your vehicle obviously as this is the easy way out and also the cheapest !
When the office staff ask for your keys you don,t need to have a go at them as they are doing what they are told the same as you!
If you have an issue take it up with the senior mgr on site at the time if necessary or the H & S mgr. if they have one!
All companies have a legal responsibility to ensure the safety of ALL employees and contractors / visitors to their site and as always they will take the (not necessarily) easiest route but more importantly the cheapest option and not necessarily the one which is the best of the two!
On another option when you are asked for your keys try asking the same question to the person asking for the keys by asking for the keys to their “house” as it is effectively YOUR house you are giving your keys to when you hand over your vehicle keys although I must admit that is a bit OTT though but just something to bear in mind!
Another thing to think of with regards to “Demolishing” barriers to exit a warehouse / RDC etc. just refuse to move when you reach the barrier and sit there until they open it as with any large organisation, they like you have to deliver “THEIR” goods to their stores etc. and if you can,t get out neither can their own vehicles!
Always thought us box jock’s were a cut above the rest…
As I’m never asked for my keys
doesnt really bother me, one thing i dont like is being told to stay in the cab when being loaded in coca cola personnaly i like to watch a load going onto my trailer so i know exactly how it is loaded and fit straps if needed, plus have seen some shocking displays of loading even in just over 2 months worth of driving.
LeicsShunter:
Old thread yes…If you dont want to hand over your keys then dont bother coming onto site. period.
Here we demand you uncouple before you are loaded/tipped… if you dont like it then someone else will be happy for the work I am sure.
And I’m sure if you addressed me like that, then a letter to your company’s CEO about the attitude of his staff to a visitor to the site, would mean YOU would be looking for another job, period.
LeicsShunter:
We take the keys for a reason and that is to prevent people driving off of bays on reds…
And as an individual who has never had a dock accident,I would be grateful if you wouldn’t tar me with the same brush as others.
LeicsShunter:
Yeah well we dont take keys anyway we demand drivers uncouple from the trailer.
EXCUSE ME!!! :x
You may ask me,if I will uncouple my trailer,as manners cost nothing. When you start demanding, then a polite ■■■■ off might be sufficient to make you understand that if you want me to treat you with respect, then you treat me with the same.
Ken.
I always find these help with polite conversation and manners Ken.
LeicsShunter:
Yeah well we dont take keys anyway we demand
Well these people would DEMAND once and once only with me.
I treat everyone in a decent, polite, and respectful manner.
If they start demanding and generally being rude then they will get what they deserve and some more.
Well i’ve come up with another cunning plan to stop this stupid key handing in thing.
HMRC are not amused about the security issue when drivers hand in keys, This is probably because they lose out on revenue when stuff like booze and ■■■■ are nicked from trucks. They didn’t even know the practice went on. Therefore the bonded warehouses will be told to change their system or lose their bond.
Good, maybe things might change.
I was stuck at Sainsburys Stoke the other day for 7 and a half hours, stuck in a small waiting room without enough chairs and denied access to my posessions and bunk in my unit. No apology, no explanation, nothing, AND I was forced to listen to that story about running out of time on a bay at Iceland by a fellow driver/prisoner. Completely unnacceptable by any standards.
20 mins to load 7.5 hours to tip. What a joke! Stobarts had the right idea. After 3 hours they demanded their keys back and left, still loaded.
This is what meets you at an Amazon site
Is it worth it ?

The reasion that rule was put in was because some of there fork truck drivers keep running drivers over i know this because i was run over when in sidcup depot a few years ago
they also make you do this as well.
