dog clip

I see many drivers have a quick glance at the fifth wheel to see if the pin has been pulled for mischief or malice.
If i drove off and the trailer landed on the deck the first thing the boss and Vosa or the Police would say is did i check it.

I check every morning to make sure the handle is in and the dog clip secure. I don’t trust anyone and its part of your daily check. If you need to feel safer with the drop in lock, a nut and bolt will do the same job. Vosa don’t take excuses, just large fines.

I’m paranoid about this. I’ll regularly check it for tampering. Especially if I’ve quickly stopped at a services and left the vehicle out of my sight. It only takes two extra seconds to try and pull the pin before you get in the cab.

I always check the dog clip when I have been away, in the yard or out of it.

just a question, how many people on here have had their pin pulled while stopped at traffic lights or while parked up for the night?
now I have been doing this job for 20 plus years and never had that done, ok had curtains slashed and back doors opened while a sleep but never had a pin pulled

Not me in over 35 years. If they are going to do it a dog clip certainly isn’t going to stop them. I have had curtains slashed while the back doors were open :open_mouth:

It is ok to drive with it.Mine has a dog clip which i check after a loo or coffee stop. You never know if somebody will pull the lever out for a laugh or kids do it for a dare.
An ex employer with a grudge.A padlock is ideal but do not lose the key.

“Padlock” you must have a bit of a worry going on or know some not very nice people…

You must have one by law, so chalk each wheel, and then go to the office for a paper clip, that will suffice till they buy a replacement dog clip.

Not always. At our place we had, for about 9 months, a fixed unit/trailer combination to access a very tight store. The 5th wheel slider was shortened and had the unit been used on the deep pin 13.6m trailers without resetting the 5th wheel position the light clusters and mudguards would have been damaged on the first turn. Eventually had the restrictive wall taken down and can use any of the fleet tractors and short trailers.

to round this all up, always check the fifth wheel but you are not required by law to have a dog clip if you have the spring loaded system…

correct

My truck has a Jost 5th wheel with the spring loaded L clip. Doesn’t stop the dealer fitting a dog clip when it’s in for service. Strange thing is they prepped and it passed the MOT without it but certain spanner monkeys insist on fitting it. I’ve given up explaining now about the legalities and just hand the clip and chain back to reception when collecting the truck.

Cheers

Not Thomas Hardies is it? They have one fitter who insists on fitting the dog clip when the spring clip is perfectly serviceable. I tend to deposit them on the service reception counter too.

We only have spring clips, no dog clips. Save you banging your head on a rope hook when ducking under the trailer to fit a dog clip. Or does no one have rope hooks anymore?
