If theres a hole for a dog clip, I’d use a dog clip!! I always carry a spare. Not just for that mind, it’s just a useful piece of kit to carry. Like cable ties.

Yes you can, we’ve all probably inadvertently done it in the past, I doubt it would be safe to do so as the risk of loosing the trailer is increased, and the DSVA will likely make an example of you if the find out. If someone is telling you that it is safe to do so, ignore them … it’s not. If you don’t have a spare in your pocket to enable you to crack on then defect it

Yes they would. Also where I’m at it’s a lifetime ban for agency no matter how long you’ve been there if they check you at the gatehouse on the way out and its not fitted so I’ve taken to referring to it as a P45 clip. I believe permanent drivers get one chance (although hauled into TM office for roasting) and second time it’s P45.
Cant find a specific one, but would probably come under “Defective and danger is caused or likely to be caused” within the trailer and coupling section of enforcement guidelines, with a fine of £100 and code of IM 11.
As a side note, really not sure why anyone would want to do that unless its accidental.
By rights. You should pick up on the lack of a clip (if missing) during your walk round check, report the lack on whatever defect reporting system is in place and refuse to take the vehicle out unless sorted.
If it requires a clip and it’s not on it then no go, if you want to do other peoples work and carry a spare one in your bag then your a fool, them days are gone treat them as they treat you, no medals for the fools
Dog clips are only a requirement on UK trucks the rest of Europe seems to mange without them

Thank you Mr spelling police MANAGE do you want me to write it out 10 times.
My point being that it hardly contributes to safety when no one else in Europe uses them

I am fully aware of that but is it really necessary?

WRONG !!!
We have them on our MAN units and they have to be put on, purely for a safety thing if anything.

Ok fair enough, we don’t have them and as long as the L shaped locking device is in place that is sufficient so not having the dog clip doesn’t make the 5th wheel unsafe

Agreed, L-shape slip down device is sufficient, my point was that if it’s only the dog clip then it has to be attached
My understanding is that dog clips them self’s are not a requirement. The requirement is that there is a secondary locking device, the dog clip is just the cheapest solution.
We run with a fifth wheel where the release arm drops in a recess when locked, as per manufacture. No dog clip or L bracket required. Just a quick look to ensure is seated and off we go.
