Dog Clip, Yes or No?

So we have the spring loaded “L” shaped locking bar that should prevent the handle coming out by accident. Do you still need the dog clip? I mean from a DVSA checkpoint point of view?

If it has one, I’d be using it.
Jost or Holland are the most popular here, neither have clips.

From HSE site
** Carry out a visual check that the 5th wheel jaws have engaged correctly and fit the security “dog clip” or other safety device.*

So a secondary device is needed but although a dog clip is the most common the spring clip type are OK. Vehicles do pass the MoT with them fitted.

They are better in the sense that they engage (should) automatically, but I find more them awkward to disengage.

I was told the other day on doing my checks and engaging the dog clip if the top of the clip is warn i should turn it upside down

Every time it goes in for 6 weekly inspection, it comes out with a shiny new one which I remove.

Dog clip gets covered in grease, then my gloves also. No dog clip no grease.

I find I get grease on gloves with dog clip. Pull the spring clip up and move handle towards front of unit and pull it out works for me but each to their own. However, as long as I’m covered without it at a check point then I’ll run without it. Thanks for confirming.

I am with @star_down_under
If a dog clip is fitted then use it.
No ifs no buts. No way would I do without one if fitted.

The unit I currently drive is fitted with one of them L shaped things and also a dog clip. I always ensure that the clip is engaged, not primarily from a safety point of view, but more to avoid unnecessary hassle; imagine getting pulled for a routine check and the examiner finds it swinging freely unattached? He/she is then going to think “if he doesn’t fit this properly then what else is he ignoring?”

Don’t raise flags for no reason.
