Dog clip whats legal

Been driving on agency a truck with a dog clip without a chain when you take it of you put it in cab or hang on handle, it’s been like it for about 6 months but I only drive it sometimes. Last night another agency driver would not use it because of no chain and said it was a £60 fine if caught. Is he right?

if its a 5th wheel that don’t have the drop down bar that locks the handle it needs a dog clip but there is no legal requirement for it to be on a chain. The chain is just a way for it to be attached to the vehicle so it don’t get misplaced as long as the clip is in place when connected to trailer no problem

I am with nick on this one

hope this helps

At every stop i check to see if the clip is secure, you never know if an ex employer has a grudge against the firm , even kids could pull the pin just for a laugh.

The Dog Clip and Chain are Secondary locking devices and the clip must be in position when hooked up to a trailer. The absence of the chain/wire is not a reason for failure on the MoT test, if the only purpose is to avoid the loss of the clip. However keeping the clip in the cab or other areas may mean the clip might be left there instead of being fitted to the handle when hooked up, which of course will draw the attention of an examiner on a roadside check. Much more sensible to have it on a chain or wire on the fifth wheel. Inspection Item 11 Vehicle to Trailer Coupling of the Heavy Goods Inspection Manual.
