Does anyone else miss nights out?

I’ve come home after 3 years of working away all week and I’m starting to think that I want a few nights out a week. Money isn’t the issue at all and I sure as hell don’t miss the MSAs and lay bys. I’m missing seeing the country and the variety of tramping.

Anyone else?

I love my nights out, down to my local pub, then across to wetherspoons, before heading home to my bed

If Carlsberg made nights out …

As a newbie not yet even started out yet the thought of nights out are what made me want to do this job. Would love to see the whole country.

I was exactly the same as you when I first started out. Now I wouldn’t thank you for nights out. Quite happy to be local and home every night. Only done 1 night out in just over 6yrs with my current employer and hopefully it stays that way.

I do four nights out a week, have done for over 25 years, and wouldn’t do a “home every night” job for double the money. I could earn more driving a Tesco lorry than I do as an owner-operator with all the headaches that gives me. Some of us are just born to be a “rambling man”.

as a young man i enjoyed nights out, there was nearly always somewhere in the town to park up, walk round see the sights visit various pubs talk to the locals, mostly female i must admit. all but gone now stuck in a layby or msa wouldn’t do for me i’m afraid, night trunking does me just fine now.

I sometimes miss the fact you get more sleep I.m.o.h.o,but other than that not really,i like to see my girl every day, have a chat and do the things dads do,oh yes the same applies to the mrs.

I should be on a night out right now, but due to a change of plan am home and looking forward to my own bed  Bliss !!

I did night s out then stopped for a few years, now been back doing them for 8 yrs and to be honest wouldn’t want to go back on locals again I missed it like hell when I gave up, I know its not for everyone and each to their own, and you have to have an understanding partner :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

nope :grimacing:

I liked the nights out when on flour deliveries and it meant more rest than travelling home every night. I had the chance of being a tipper tramper after a short time on a day cab but my wife likes the hours I’m doing and if I’d accepted it I’d have to do 2 nights min a week. I’ll have a sleeper cab but only for emergencies or when work is flat out.

They are an infrequent occurrence, but I like them as I get night out money, eight hours pay, and parking paid. I then have the choice of whether or not to work the next day,

No stress of having to get up early. Earning an extra £6000 tax free. Earning about £3-4 grand a year more wages. Yes nights out have great advantages and I do loads with the family on a weekend and feel less tired.

Don’t miss them at all.
Earn more now than I did when I was doing them.
Home every afternoon, sleep in a proper bed, watch a big screen tv, shower/bath in a clean room etc.
Earning more does have downfalls like higher tax rate etc

Eff me! How much do you get for nights out? I get £27 and worked it out to be £5076, 52 weeks in a year minus roughly 5 weeks for holidays = 47 weeks multiplied by 4 nights out is 188 nights out then times that by whatever you get for a night out. Jesus I should have been on the krypton factor (if I wasn’t about 6 at the time!)

No, hated them then and hope to God i never have to do another.

Warm welcome when i arrive home, dinner, home comforts of all descriptions, warm bed, get up in the morning after a proper nights sleep, if i want a pee a real toilet, wash and brush up in comfort, take the lovely wifey a cupa in insulated mug before i leave, go to work, enjoy my easy day, go home, rinse and repeat, you can stick nights out where the sun don’t shine.

This is one of them subjects where,if Youve never done nights out,( like Me ) You always fancy ago, just to see whats its like, and the bit of adventure thing.
I know for certain,I’d get more sleep.Bet it takes some getting use of though.
But yeh,I’d give it ago.

Depends on the circumstances. When I worked for Haulfast and then Owens, I quite enjoyed them as it meant ranging further afield, staying in different places, meeting different people etc.

Nowadays I get them as a result of running out of time when we’re busy, and frequently within an hour or so of home. Ironically I’ve now got a far nicer cab to kip in (Renault Premium) than I ever had before but they aren’t as enjoyable.

Other things have changed too. Back in the day it was acceptable to go and have a couple of beers with other drivers of an evening, provided of course you hadn’t got a silly o’clock start, you could smoke in your cab and also set your cab up as a “home from home” by personalising it a bit, nothing silly but it just makes those nine or eleven hours a bit more bearable. All those three things are a strict no-no with my current employer; the first two I don’t mind because it’s pretty much the same for everyone but the last one does grate a bit.

I miss seeing the country, not the crap msa & lay-bys that reek of ■■■■…

I had 11 years of 3,4,5 nights out a week. But gave it up 18 months ago for a homing pigeon job. Personally i miss it and all that comes with it, but the kids are growing up quick and i was missing out on the little things. school plays, sports days and the such.what seemed to really swing it for me was, i left one monday came home on the friday and my 6 year old boy appeared to have grown up, changed so much in the space of one week it was scarey.
