I use it all the time!
We get a bollocking if we register more than an hours break on a standard 11 and a quater day. So, if we get to a store and there’s a truck in front of us, just pop it onto poa and get some shut eye!

all the drivers saying that they’ve never used it and never will are just stupid and obviously dont understand tacograph rules and laws.
you call yourselves professional drivers but you show yourselves to be inept at understanding the basics rules.

no mate,
being a professional driver has [zb] all to do with abiding by every sodding rule they bring out. it’s about getting the job done.
what the [zb] has a tachograph got to do with my professionalism?
safe loading, securing, vehicle condition. the manner in which you drive, reversing where no man has gone before, reading a map, timing. are just some of the professional parts of the job. tacho regs are just something that was brought in to give fare competition for all EU member states. before we had tacho regs, we still had professional drivers.
some of us still are, but some of us don’t embrace every rule like a militant unionist. some of us can still think for ourselves.

Stupid!? inept!?
main tachograph rules are when your time runs out you pull the card out and crack on!!!
dustylfc:
… plus if stopped by vosa outside r,d,c you carnt tell them you just had a break whilst on a bay,
garnerlives:
Why can’t you be on break when sat on a bay doing [zb] all??
dustylfc:
dunno why but am sure i read it that on your break you must be free to walk about and do what you want on your break and you carnt in an rdc in fact most have sigms up saying no breaks on bays, but i may have read it wrong or getting mixed up with weekly rest period, i will try find were i read it,if am wrong i will take it all back
REST = being able to dispose of your time as you wish
BREAK = not working
i use it all the time, i make sure i get my breaks but also use poa just to show willing.
Used it once, got an infringement. Haven’t bothered since.

WHY?
My understanding of POA - and I’m quite happy to be corrected - ist that you must know how long you are going to have free. So if you are in a queue and you get told be with you in a minute, mate and two hours later you get tipped, then POA doesn’t apple. But if you get told, We’ll tip you in 2 hours time and you can park upthen, that is POA.
We do a lot of double-manning and the sheer stupidity of POA is exemplified by the fact that whoever isn’t driving is on POA because they know they aren’t driving for 4.5 hours or whatever. I checked this scenario out when I went on a course when the WTD was beig introduced becasue it doesn’t make any sense. If two drivers leave Manchester (this was an actual job we were doing at the time), load a large box at Carlise, go out of Immingham to Gothenburg (27 hour crossing), tip and re-load about 80 miles out of Gothenburg, get back to the ferry same day, sail back into Immingham Friday morning and tip Carlisle before coming home. Technically speaking if the second driver didn’t do any driving (plenty of hours for the first to do all the driving),d idn’t help load - only one crate, then he’s on POA all week!!! Crazy!!! The frist driver BTW has probably only worked about 30 hours despite being out all week.

This could get interesting if a designated second driver did no driving under EU regs - is he the second driver or is he just another workmate
If the second man does no driving under EU regs in any one day then does he need to only record his NAME, DATE, START & FINISH times which can either be done by inputting that into a digi, writing it on a digi printout or using a seperate analogue card for each day
If no driving under EU regs is done in any one week (mon 0000 to sun 2400) then does the second man needs to record… ANYTHING
The second man would be under the normal WTD and not the RT(WTD)R if no driving under EU regs was done in any of the above senarios but does that apply if he is the designated second driver
For double manning ONLY the first 45 mins of POA is regarded as BREAK as the digi cannot record BREAK when the card is in the second man slot
ROG I’d rely on you and a few of the more ‘in the know’ guys to tell me!
They are both drivers. In reality, they would split the driving and the loading etc between them. I just put that forward as a scenario to see if one would be on POA all week.

That bit is as maybe but if one of them never drives then does that make the one who does not drive a DRIVER or a NON-DRIVER
I know that simply holding a LGV licence does not mean that they are a DRIVER if there are two in a vehicle
This is one of those senarios I have never come across so cannot give a definitive answer - I can only hope that those more knowledgable than me can

yes basically the other driver is on poa cos he is availiable to drive, and if i think if he is hired as a driver then thats what he is if he is double manning he isnt just going along for the drive so ive never double manned but am sure they would split the day into 4.5 hrs driving each and so on, but thinking of that scenario if he never driven any of the way or got out and helped am sure he would be on poa all week, then when he got back to the yard probably get laid off cos he wasent needed
