Do you pick hitchikers up?

Does anyone still do this? I used to do it quite a bit if someone had trade plates, but cant be aresed anymore, only if they come and ask while im fuelling up.

But you don’t seem bothered whether it’s male or female or even human.

Not anymore, company I’m with doesn’t allow it; although I’ll pick a trade plater up if I’m in the car

Not on the wagons now but I used to pick tradeplaters up and sometimes students. Did pick one chap up as I was getting on the M1 southbound at junction 25 early one morning, I was headed for White Hart Lane, Tottenham with roofing chippings but he didn’t know this. I asked him where he was heading and he replied just drop me near a Tube Station as I am headed for Spurs ground as they have an International game tonight!! Really spooky. and a good day for him to buy a Lottery ticket
Not sure if I would pick any up nowadays but to be honest there dosen’t seem to be so many about as there used to be.

Pete.

had this convo with a mucker of mine
dont seem to see very many platers and real hitchhikers are rarer than hens
teeth
all students have cars it seems

i picked up one coming of Magna pk the other day he had a Cov sign
so he was lucky as i could go that way to my drop

he had finished his shift late and his lift had been sent home early

in January as money is now tight i will be hitching down to Bodmin
for the first time in 5 years
last serious hitch was last year to pick up car in Dumfries for said mate in Bod
(not on plates) just a few well chosen signs

best hitch Leamington to Ullapool 13 hours in 4 lifts

Pulled out of Watford gap late one night and it was chucking it down. (rain!)
And this guy was thumbing a lift, felt sorry for him…Where ya goin mate? he said near to London as possible please. Ok, but where you heading for? Brighton he said i need to get to Victoria coach station…i can do better than that…I’m going to Brighton, oh cool he said…and promptly fell asleep!! Thanks for the company!! :imp:

PM ME WHEN YOU ARE COMING TO BODMIN HITCH

I picked one up once with a really bad stutter, it was hard work to talk to him and I was really glad when he got out.

Yeah i usually pick up hitchhikers, unless them seem like complete mentalists.

Was fueling up at Frankley these two guys out their faces with Manc accents appeared, allright mate were just out the jail any chance your going north, no mate i,m heading south !

Not the best opening line to get a lift.

I was told that it was a load of crap if the company said that you cant give people lifts because of insurance, because all policies cover for passengers whether authorised or not

The vehicle’s third party insurance will almost certainly cover passengers, but the Goods In Transit insurance might not and that’s probably the gaffer’s reason for banning it.

Paul

I thought it was more the point the passenger wasn’t insured so if you have an accident the passenger could sue the company.

‘…Does anyone still do this?..’

Yeah, but not in a client’s wagon.

As a sprog serviceman in the 70’s I had cracking lifts in H/LGV’s that significantly influenced my choice to abandon what became a time-served trade in order to drive a lorry when I left the mob. As a kid in a man’s uniform I invariably got the ride whilst my mates spent their pay on train fares and the hippies on the roadside got left behind…

I’ve since had a fair spread of herberts in my passenger seat and not one regret: What’s the point in being a(nother) British misery?
