Do you need a digicard for trunking?

Was just reading a job description for a shunting job. Question: would you need to insert and use a digicard for yard based shunting, where you were using the regular fleet vehicles, rather than a specialist or dedicated tug unit?

Not applying for the job, am asking just purely out of curiosity as unlike the old analogue tachos, the digi ones record every movement the truck makes and wondered what the workaround is for that?

Any work that involves trucks you will need a digicard.

are you really sure about that … :open_mouth:

Number 1 your heading says TRUNKING ■■
Number 2 if your not going on the highway why would you.

Your using a road unit OFF ROAD… the same as a tug (shunt unit) don’t have tacho’s fitted

Considering the type of questions you are asking about Drivers hours regulations, I’d be careful about making such sweeping statements.

No, you don’t need a driver card to drive HGV vehicles unless you’re driving them on public roads.

looking at his past posts I just realised school holidays are still on

You don’t need a driver card to drive HGVs on private land, nor to drive a vehicle fitted with an analogue tachograph, nor to drive HGVs on domestic regulations.

Not quite. If you don’t do any highway work, you don’t need a card in. However, if you go out on the road, you will need proof of other work, breaks, POA and rest periods, these can be on a digi-card, manual entries on the back of a tacho-disc or manual entries on a printout. The operator will also have to account for the missing mileage covered whilst shunting.

If the job is purely off public roads you don’t need one,
but maybe they might require someone who can take a truck on the road now and then.

Or Maybe it’s a way for them to record the shunters working hours.

Or maybe it’s because it’s easier for them to keep records, if the shunter is using trucks that also go on the road.

You got me on that one.

If our man just shunts on private property he doesnt even need a licence,DCPC or digi card.It would be a heluva big yard if mileage comes into it.

Just imagine… No digicard for trunking…

How far would you be expected to go without stopping? I reckon til the fuel runs out!

No more trailer swaps - you’re going all the way there driver!!

you’d be surprised how many miles are covered in a busy yard

You don’t even need an HGV licence in some PRIVATE ports around the UK to drive their tugmasters so long as you don’t exit the Port.

Our 3 tugs work 24/5, 52 weeks a year in a yard, are just over 2 yrs old and have racked up between 34000 & 37000 km’s each.

The yard I am in right now is almost 1km right round. With a large fleet you could soon rack up quite a few kms on shunting

Morrisons at B/water is a km in length so that s just over 2kms driving round the whole building or just from one end to the other moving a trailer
