As a student, you’re probably used to the idea of internships, personally I think they should be illegal but that’s not the point. Fair enough having an assessment for an hour, you don’t expect to be paid for a job interview after all. But it doesn’t take 7 hours to determine if you’re competent.
Going by some of the twonks on here Cavey, I’m not so sure !!
Only one days work this week? Surprising given that so many are taking holidays around the break between terms.
£150 in the hand and nothing to follow, or what could passing the assessment lead to? Maybe if you make the right impression you could get as much work as you want when you want it, or then again just another name added to the bottom of the list to ask when the preferred names aren’t available?
You need to do your homework on both your agencies and their clients to make a sensible decision, maybe take £150 now and do yourself out of several hundred a week in the months to come, or sacrifice the £150, fail the assessment and don’t get another chance at the job you turn down.
Go with your guts, either way could work out for or against you, make your own decision and accept the consequences.

Yeah I’ve been sitting by the phone and calling my agency - but just the one job. They are nice people but don’t have big contracts - so it’s mainly ad hoc stuff. I was signed up with another agency but they stopped calling me after I insisted on being paid for the hours I actually worked. So no great loss.
Which is why I signed up to a couple more agencies. First one wanted me to work at an airport - but I said no as the forms seemed like a pain in the arse. Also I have lived abroad so referencing would be a drama. And then they gave me this assessment.
Second one I signed up for this afternoon and they said there is work on night for as long as you want it. This job offered is also a reasonable rate for class 2, and is higher than I’ve ever been paid for driving. Apparently the agency have 14 other drivers in there and it’s basically a full time job.

A new agency want me to do a 7 hour assessment day (unpaid).
.
Do mugs actually do this?? No wonder this job is on its legs when [zb] will work a day for free!!
I have been asked to do 6 hours unpaid for Tesco next Monday (on agency) however once I work my first week its added to that
And what if you are not asked back after the first day? You have just worked a day for free.
Why not demand 6 hours pay for a 6 hour assesment?
Actually thinking about it why does it take 6 hours to prove you can drive?
If I fail drive straight out in about an hour. The rest is site induction
Norberts/XPO used to be a full days induction once you’d passed the driving assessment. The induction even included the old rocking the box to gauge the weight and bend your legs not your back bullshine!

A site induction is not an assessment is it? You should be paid for inductions. I go on building sites every day and do inductions. I’m paid for that.
Look fellas this game is never gunna change as long as there are mugs that are happy to work for free. When an agency sends you off for an assesmnet DEMAND payement. If they refuse then dont go. Eventually this little scam will soon stop if you have some self respect.
While back I applied to stagecoach thought about being bus driver. .Anyway they said come for interview which I did lasted 10 mins. Then said we need a quick driving assessment went ok. They took me out in a transit minibus had me.drive around for about an hour . Was like taking my driving test again. Some polish guy saying take next left down here next right etc lasted about an hour.
Then he turned round said your driving not very good is it you indicate to early. Don’t hold stering wheel correct poistion… And so on. I told him came for interview not a driving test and told him where to go… I’d of loved to see his driving skills

As said its paid the next week. I know a guy who works there, only does 4 days (his choice) but told me could do 6/5 constantly if he wanted.

True this. I had interview & assesment in current job. Got offered and site induction was part of my first week of working there. No way I’d do all the induction for free. Madness

Surely passing a medical, theory test, hazard perception test, C test, C&E test and completing the cpc is a pretty good assessment of your skills…
Why do companies think they can get away with this crap.

That must be site specific mate, mine consisted of a 30 minute drive on a sunny day through Grantham laughing and pointing at the fat chicks in muffin tops followed by a 30 minute tour of the yard pointing out the vehicle wash, the fuel pumps, where the workshop was located etc.

We need pay for our labour. If you are an experienced driver then 20 minutes would be long enough. I have on occasion gone out with a new pass just to show the quirks of the vehicle but it doesn’t take long.
Its not just an assessment its a induction as well, i have done a 2 day induction before
So much for the experts
If its a big company there is loads to learn ie like DD, different cabs, different trailers, health & safety, procedures of the premises plus lots more
And you thought you knew everything
I agree entirely, it does not matter a ■■■■ whether you’re newbie or not.
Thing is it’s like everything else in this game,…If drivers are stupid enough to accept this sort of crap willinglly, and take it as ‘‘normal’’ it will always be tried out by ■■■■ shysters such as Agencies…end of.

Ask to go out on assessment in an 05 plate or older vehicle, to “Demonstrate your old-school skills”
Paper Tachos, Problem solved!
Aye if if it doesn’t fall out the window it accidentally falls on the floor face down and I trip over it several times when trying to pick it up. I’m a clumsy old Hector
On topic I woukdbt give a full day for free. I’d go and work at the other place but if also explain to agency that if I was paid for the time I’ll be there then…
I can think of several places who do this (Asda XDC, polypipe), mainly because of the H&S BS. You sit and watch several videos, fill in numerous forms, a break for coffee, watch several more videos, fill in numerous more forms, walk around the site be shown where the fire exits, canteen, toilets and transport office are. Another break while the assessor has breakfast, then comes the driving assessment is done 1 by 1.
I detest these long assessments/ inductions but always I’m guaranteed 8hrs min pay
