Every day there is very heavy congestion on the M1 northbound around the Kegworth area,( it doesn’t seem as bad southbound) so my question is - do we really need the northbound access to the motorway at J24?
Within a very short distance - about 2.5 miles - we have three entries onto the motorway, but do we really need all three? Traffic coming from the A42 obviously needs 23A, but northbound traffic coming on at 24 could just as easily join at 24A (via a short run up the A50). I believe that by closing the northbound access road at J24 a lot of the frustrating congestion could be removed, and your journeys should be quicker and less stressful.

I think you have forgotten about traffic on the A6 coming through Kegworth. I have often seen MAJOR queues coming from Kegworth.
It may get sorted when (if?) they get started with the bypass.
Yes that area does need sorting.
Perhaps having the A453(?) jumping OVER J24 that way Northbound traffic coming from Donnington Park/ East Midlands Airport (Going towards Nottingham) will not get held up by North bound traffic coming from Kegworth.
As it is such a busy junction, why doesn’t the new widening start there? when that’s finished it should make further up better, but it’ll still only be three lanes at the busiest junction!

It can’t because of the ‘flood plain’ between j24 and j25 - it is already a ‘raised’ section, and the cost of putting extra lanes in was prohibative

And because of human rights, we cannot move the ■■■■■ site on the n/b side, god forbid, they paid serious CASH for that site
Funny how HMRC never ask questions when a piece of land changes hands for CASH, where ■■■■■■ are involved
If you look at the Highways Agency website - go to proposed works section ( i have way too much time on my hands¬!!) - it is proposed that there will be hard shoulder running & active traffic management introduced between 24 & 25 on the M1 (also further up from 29 - 31 - rather than widen it as was previously planned).
There is also mention of widening the current A453 running towards Notts - a new Kegworth bypass and a new 23A junction… - all planned to start 2015 (ish)…
The section is worth a look if you have have 10 mins to kill etc - surprising what is planned across the UK (whether it gets delivered is another matter of course…)

Part of the reason for the queues from the A6 Kegworth are caused by the congestion on the M1 around J24. If that junction (northbound) was closed off, drivers wanting the M1 northbound from Kegworth, and from the airport area would go a short distance up the A50 and join the M1 at J24A and traffic flow should be a lot better. Traffic from those areas wanting to go to south Nottingham would just go as they do now.
I admit I dont know that area very well as far as the motorway goes .
When I was young and lived near Melton Mowbray I got to know the route from Willoughby-on-the-Wolds, Wymeswold, Rempstone (Anyone remember that corner as it was originally? Look at the pub carpark, that was the road) Hathern and Kegworth. Now I live in Lincoln, to go to Donnington Park from here I get off the A46 at Willoughby , I dont use the A52/A453 because they are both car-parks!!
Any Hams remember the RSGB Rally at Donnington Park in 2007? Lucy and I went there from our caravan at Doncaster. It took 3 hours to get from J25 of the M1 to Donny Park. We saw one car get a picnic table out just off the A50. There was also a Formula Renault meeting there also and (So Im lead to believe) some paper gave away free tickets for the Saturday. What a screw up!!
Shame Donnington tried for hosting the Formula 1, I liked that circuit.

That was one of the problems in my opinion that Donington Ventures didn’t get the backing it needed. instead of jumping in with both feet first and ripping up the track, he should have gone to the planners and local authority to get the accesses improved first. No one in my local area expected them to be able to host the F1 without a massive cash injection to the road system. Silverstone used to have the same problems before the A43 was constructed to todays standard.
At least the Wheatcrofts have got control again and will hopefully be able to reopen the circuit and get back the lost race events. But the junctions still need to be sorted for the Airport and the race circuit
