If you want to drive HGVs commercially after September 2014 you will need to do 35 hours DCPC training by 9th September 2014.

I was going to say that but to be pedantic I would have said LGVs

I’m sure you’ve just parted with loads of money but I would suggest you do your 35 hours asap and finances allow. This will make you a better bet for a prospective employer.

All the best, Pete

thanks peps

witch mods do i need 1 2 & 3 4

It will also be money wasted if he then gets a job where the company provide DCPC training.

On that point … I wonder what some companies will do if they have drivers which they want to keep but do not have the required hours close to the cut off date …

No, that’s initial cpc and you dont need that. The cpc I’m talking about is the periodic training - known as ā€œthe 35 hoursā€. Costs vary but reckon on around Ā£80 per day all in. Can be more, can be less. Once complete, you’re sorted till Sept 2019.

It will also be money wasted if he then gets a job where the company provide DCPC training.

Perfectly valid point. But even then, he’s still a better prospect as he’s saving them some cash.

Not got a clue - - but we’re already set up to work nights August 2013 (PCV) and August 2014 (LGV).

Thanks Pete how many days will I need or is it just one day

Before my current employment I was in a situation of having put it off due to it not being a legal requirement and the fact that I had to pay for it myself.

It lasts five years does it?

Who takes their car for an MOT two or three months before it’s due?

Thanks Pete how many days will I need or is it just one day

It’s 5 days to complete it (35hrs).

Who takes their car for an MOT two or three months before it’s due?

Very few, I expect. But take it for MOT 1 month early and you get a 13 month MOT. With driver cpc, once the 35 hours has been completed, it runs for 5 years from the expiry of the existing entitlement. Grandfather rights expire Sept 14 so complete the 35 hours anytime running up to it and you’ll get a card valid until Sept 2019. Did it myself in 2008 and my card expires Sept 2019. So, unlike a car MOT, there’s nothing to loose by doing the cpc early.

Hope that helps, Pete

It’s a shame your instructors weren’t on the VOSA database, I got 14 hours in on my cat C, and another 14 for my C+E.

Only had to pay a minimal upload fee.

After that I did another 7 hours one Saturday with them, which was an absolute scream, loads of coffee & biscuits too, all for the princely sum of £62.

That’s that boxed off for 5 years

Just a quickie Pete. I’m sorted until 2019, but if my present employer starts putting drivers through it in the near future, and I attended, would this mean I’d be sorted until 2024?

Any training you do before Sept 2014 wont count. Needs to be within 5 years of the expiry date of the card.

I’ve been away from driving for several years but qualify for grandfather rights, and want to keep my licence up to date, just in case, but what exactly do they teach in the 35 hours?

A lot of nonsense by 75% of trainers.

If you are lucky you’ll get a good one.

You pays your money and takes your chance.

There is a list of topics around which trainers write their own courses. Each course has to be approved (this is far from automatic) and delivered by a qualified trainer.

The topics can be found by doing a courses search on the JAUPT website.

The general feeling (see dar1976’s comment) is that it’s all a waste of time. My experience has been that drivers come into the course expecting it to be a waste of time but those that make the effort to participate not only enjoy it but learn plenty as well.

Those who are determined it’s a waste of time will sit in the corner and waste their day and their money. Pity.

Pete

I did say 75% of trainers waste the time of the candidates. Which still leaves 25% of good trainers.

I think that was a bit unfair twisting my words Mr Smythe.

I would say a lot depends on how much of your hard earned you want to pay out to get the same end result - a DQC

For some its important to learn the stuff.

For others it’s just about compliance and therefore should go for the cheapest option.
