Do companies still help put newbies through their Tests?

Evening Folks,

Just a question really as I’ll be sitting my theory in literally weeks to come, I’m just wondering do companies still put hopeful new lads through their licenses. Just asking because I’m thinking of going round first off to local companies and ask if it would be something they could help with as with Driving apprenticeships now being available to lads wanting to start out. As with my current company if the depot I work at is anything to go by I’d rather not :grimacing: Just thinking it won’t hurt to try?

Cheers

I know Stobbart do take young driver & put them through there test but only take at certain times but that is all

Most like you to have all before they will take you on but if you dont ask you will never know

If your first impression that you give to a company is … Hi, I’m on the scrounge, it may not score you many points.

However I wish you luck on your adventure

Thats true, as I said it won’t hurt to ask stranger things have happened.

And Dar I understand that totally but I always try giving the impression of someone who wants to learn and keen on doing the job in question. It’s not me trying to be cheap but in a way I see it better being trained up in a company getting work experience at the same time. As you know I’ll go any means necessary to pay for my hgv training even if it means selling the beloved computer to do so (It will be up for sale once it’s been paid off in December  Makes sense that way!). Thankfully my car license itself shouldn’t cost me as much as I thought it would. Although I’ve already forked out £300+ on lessons alone with a further £500+ going on further lessons and my theory test. Thats assuming I’ll need that many lessons.

Was just wondering if newbies have still been known to get put through their tests by companies besides stobarts

Cheers

It sounds good getting a company to pay for your training but they will aways keep reminding you of it,that rush job when everyone else has gone home will be down to you because you owe us. All the bad jobs will be for you because they no you carn’t say anything because if you leave they will want there money back.Better to save up and pay for it yourself you say you are paying up tp £800 for your car test same would get you started on truck test. When i did mine i paid for 2 hours each saturday morning so never got a big bill stayed in work while learning and passed after 7 weeks.

My mate went for a driving job with RCS Logistics. They have told him that they will at some point put him through his HGV tests and they will pay. That’s one company that can be added to the list.

I havent heard of many at all most companies wont now due to recession and high turn over of drivers etc its in a lot of cases to much of a risk paying for it then trainee getting licences theb leaving

You would be very lucky to get a firm to pay for your training. The bus co.s that do it try to get you to sign up for 2 years, they cant really enforce this though.Asda were training up their shop workers dont know if they still do it.

My firm has put quite a few drivers through tests, these are drivers that have been with the company a few years though who they are happy with. I have just got my lad in as a fork truck driver so hopefully he will get put through in a couple of years and will be out causing chaos in France like his dad lol. Your not tied for a period after either as the boss looks at it as you’ve already put in good service. When I was at sainsbury’s hams hall they put some wharehouse staff and security through. I allso remember one of the traffic clerks put through, funny how he never had problems with start times and rubbish runs.

Thanks for the feedback! I was asking purely on a wim whether companies still do put people through their tests. Just seems more logical if it is possible to get in with a company to get both the licenses for the job but experience also. I know wiseman daries did but unsure whether they still do or not but is another company of those I shall be asking. Can’t hurt to try!

Cheers

Mickeyblue, having worked for RCS logistics, i have never heard of them paying for anybodys lgv licence. things may have changed in the last 4 months, but if you want more info, pm me. They are generally a good firm, but the money could be better.
