Is there any requirement to have the Digi card inserted in the tachograph while doing walkround vehicle checks.
I prefer to insert card when i’m happy with the vehicle and include my vehicle checks in with my manual entries,
Start at 0500, check over vehicle untill 0520, insert card at 0520, manual entries (other work) from 0500 to 0520.
If there is a requirement or european directive please let me know what it is and where it’s written.
Many thanks

No, there is no such requirement.

Hi guys
The following is an extract from COUNCIL REGULATION (EEC) No 3821/85 which clearly states “…starting from the moment they take over the vehicle”.
Furthermore, it states that manual entries are made when “…as a result of being away from the vehicle”.
It follows that whilst doing a walk round vehicle check your digital card should be in the tachograph vehicle unit.
I hope this is useful.

2. Drivers shall use the record sheets or driver cards every day on which they are driving, starting from the moment they take over the vehicle. The record sheet or driver card shall not be withdrawn before the end of the daily working period unless its withdrawal is otherwise authorized. No record sheet or driver card may be used to cover a period longer than that for which it is intended.
When as a result of being away from the vehicle, a driver is unable to use the equipment fitted to the vehicle, the periods of time referred to in paragraph 3, second indent (b), (c) and (d) shall:
(a) if the vehicle is fitted with recording equipment in conformity with Annex I, be entered on the record sheet, either manually, by automatic recording or other means, legibly and without dirtying the sheet; or
(b) if the vehicle is fitted with recording equipment in conformity with Annex IB, be entered onto the driver card using the manual entry facility provided in the recording equipment.
If you put your card in first it at least proves what time you started work. 20 minutes for a walkround check? What you driving?
