Quick question regarding digital tachograph cards…
A new smart tachograph became mandatory from the 15th June 2019 on newly registered/built vehicles… I have read that the tachograph card for these is different, and although the old cards will work they will not store all the information the smart tachograph records …
When I renewed my licence late August/early September I got the tachograph card, will this be the new type card? I have asked the DVLA to see if they can say… I would have thought as this was new a couple of months after the smart tachograph was introduced it “should” me a smart tachograph card…
What do you think?
Stuart
Apparently the DVSA have said that all new driver cards issued from early 2019 are compatible with the new smart tachographs and will hold the new data collected by the new smart tachograph.
Though from the little that I’ve read it’s not going to do you as a driver any good, the new fields are mostly to do with vehicle location (GPS implementation) at certain times i.e. the start and end of the daily work period and every 3 hours of driving.
Thank you… I have tried searching and found nothing myself, as I say I have emailed them to ask…
I would think that since the legislation is from 2016 and it started in June they would make all card compatible, but you never know lol … they do strange things…
Looking at card pictures on the internet mine does look different so maybe the one’s I have seen are the old type and mine is the new… Mine looks like the top one.
It was just mentioned yesterday on the CPC course during a break, nothing to do with the module I was doing, but I was just interested in it… I knew it was GPS etc ,

The DVLA have confirmed that the card will be the latest type…
I appreciate you contacting DVLA to seek clarification on the matter.
On checking your record I can see that the Digital Tachograph card you have received is your first one.
Therefore I can confirm that you will have received the most up to date type of card.
