I passed my Class C a couple of weeks ago(the most nerve wracking experience of my life), I have been on the net looking at agency work, what I wanted to know is do I have to apply for a Digital Tachograph card/ drivers smart card from the DVLA, before going into the agency, would that maybe help me getting some work experience quicker?? Help and advice greatly appreciated!!

Digital tachos are usually required by agencies if you work for them but you are responsible for getting one. If you work for a non-agency they might be nice and pay for it but don’t hold your breath!

You don’t have to have a driver card to work for an agency, but there are plenty of vehicles now fitted with digital tachographs and you can’t drive one of them if you don’t have a driver card, so you will be reducing your chances of finding work if you don’t have one.

Yes, you should go get your digi card (Pay the £35 tax for existing to the DVLA).
Every wagon under 2 years old will have a digi, and a few older ones may as well. Since most haulage companies (ok, just the ones you’d want to work for…) will keep wagons for no more than 5 or 6 years, the pool of jobs that don’t have digi is shrinking.
The digi is now a necessity.
I was a class 2 agency at the time these things came in. I gave in and got it after 18 months, because all the work was just plain disappearing. These days, I’d not advise anyone to try and live without one. The only reason for not paying for one right now, is if you sign with an agency or employer that will get it for you, and the chances of that are slim.
