Digital Tacho Card

Having passed my test when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth and having just come back to driving about 10 months ago I have a digi card but it is a bit erratic (Or I think it is) I drive a variety of vehicles and sometimes when I shove the card in it reads my name and does the stepping blocks bit. I do the yes to country and no to manual entry etc and then it just often goes to “Driving without card” I remove the card and try again and often it does the same thing. In the end I do the professional thing and say “Sod it” and off I go. Now sometimes it carries on saying that but is recording and sometimes it doesnt record. Sometimes it behaves impeccably. I have tried wiping the chip. The card is always put back in a sleeve after use and never gets grubby.

Is it me? Have I got a duff one? Should I take up smoking a pipe?

Are you sure you are putting your card in slot 1.

It means who ever drove the truck last did so without a card
So just press OK problem solved

Beat me to it  Took me a while to work out that it usually happened on a Monday when I had hunted for my wagon coz it wasn’t where I left it…

Thanks - guess theres a lot of trucks being driven around with no tachos in then.

Yes, but only for very short distances, otherwise you know who will want to know the reason.

Lorries are often moved around a yard without a card in, it doesn’t really become a problem until some distance is covered with no card and obviously that would start alarm bells ringing at a road-side check.

The movement without card is nothing for you to worry about, when you get into the vehicle and the warning sign flashes just press OK on the tachograph and all will be well again

Daft thing is, a hgv driver not going on public roads that day, can drive it with out a card in, but a driver who is, can’t.
