Digi-tacho and tramping

Ok, tramping, in one single vehicle, single manned.
When parked up at night, do I have to take it out? Can I just switch it to break to record the overnight kip? How about weekends?
And if the unit is uncoupled from the trailer, can I move the unit to go to the shops on my own time by finding where the “Out of scope” option is in the menus?

Don’t think you have to eject it, just finish the details for the day.

Keep it safe.

Don’t think there’s a derogation in the rules for “shops on own time”:lol::lol::lol:

If I can’t go shopping in the only transport available to me, in my own time, is it really a break? Since the definition of break/rest is “Being freely able to dispose of your time”.
Didn’t there used to be a way of borrowing the boss’s wagon to, for example, move house, with no tacho requirement? Usually you put one in to account for the milage, but marked it “Personal use” and it was allowable even in the middle of your weekly rest… Did that change?

You can please yourself weather or not you take the card out at night, but obviously you will need to remember to switch it to rest mode, at weekends can you be sure no-one will use the motor and not your card, personally I wouldn’t consider leaving the card in at weekends but maybe that’s just me being suspicious.
A macplaxton said there’s no EU exemption for shopping

The regulations have changed, the only exemption now is for “vehicles or combinations of vehicles with a maximum permissible mass not exceeding 7.5 tonnes used for the non-commercial carriage of goods”.

So sorry, but legally you will need to do your shopping before parking up for the night.

It’s a break if you a free to dispose of your time, but it doesn’t include having a free set of wheels to drive where you like.

There’s always bus/taxi/cycle/roller blade/run/jog/walk/crawl.

I suppose if the vehicle was over 25 years old and classed as “histroic” and the other conditions were met, you could do your shopping in that!

You do not have to take the card out each night if you are tramping. Likewise you do not have to leave it in the tacho either, although if I was running abroad I’d be tempted to leave the card in. With regard to the weekly rest, if you can guarantee no-body else will use the vehicle you could leave it in. If there was a chance of yard staff or another driver moving the vehicle, I’d take the card out. However, if you do leave the card in you must do two things;

  • enter a location for duty end
  • set the mode switch for slot 1 to rest.

When you start the next morning;

  • enter the start of duty location
  • set the mode switch for slot 1 to other work.
Do this before doing your walk around check, assuming you do one

Like others have said; there is no such thing as ‘private use’ of a vehicle if its’ maximum authorised mass exceeds 7.5 tonnes. This changed on 11th April 2006 and applies equally to vehicles fitted with analogue or digital tachos.

personally i would leave it in all week and take it out at weekends (or when you are not sleeping in it).

i used to leave mine in if i was doing a weeks worth of work for someone on the agency but one night i pressed the eject button and didn’t press OK for the end country:UK bit and ended up starting work the next night “illegal”

i just had to put a note on the back of the tacho printout and give it to the boss of the firm i was driving for, one thing i did have to do was take a 45 before it would stop flashing at me as it thought i was over my driving hours. i wont be doing that again!!!

the choice is yours really

How do you set “End of duty” without removing the card? I have the short version of the instructions, but it doesn’t cover this eventuality.

you just switch it to break and it sits on break until you move it again or change the settings manually

What make?

The wagon is a DAF, so the digi will most likely be a VDO one. I have the web version of the instructions printed out, but they don’t cover this situation.

There must be a menu option on it so you can enter “end duty location” without having to eject the card.

But I never seen one of these things, so can’t really comment

There is a menu option for “End Duty Location”.
On a Siemens digi-tacho you have to be stationary and have the ignition on.
Press OK.
Scroll down to “Entry Driver 1”.
Press OK.
The first available option is “Start Duty Location” with the last country code you entered beside it, flashing.
Scroll down one, to “End Duty Location”. If you are in the same country as you started in, then press OK to “enter” that country code.
If not, scroll down and the last 3 country codes you entered will be displayed in order. You are then given the country codes from A to Z.
If you scroll up instead, you are given the country codes from Z to A.
(Useful for going to UK, if it doesn’t come up in the recent entries)
Once the country code for the country you are in is being displayed.
Press OK. Wait a few seconds, until “Entry Stored” shows on the display.
Press the Back Arrow 3 times to return to the normal display.
Press mode switch, to get bed mode.
Switch off your ignition and dispose of your time in any way you like, as long as driving the wagon somewhere else isn’t involved. :smiling_imp:

‘Private Use’ is now out of the window, in this type of scenario.

It is now down to ‘hail a cab’.

But what I would say is that, for anyone who now fills in a Tax return, ‘Taxi fares’ could be a legitimate claim (I would suggest). The lack of any receipt or evidence of payment could easily be attributed to language difficulties or a reluctance of the provider in the country concerned to furnish such.

Press mode switch, to get bed mode.

From reading the other threads, that appears to be the most important bit to remember
