Please let me apologise if this has been asked many times, this is my first time on here ! Digi card stated i had driven more minutes than my timer and I am astonished at this ! I do trailer swaps at RDC’s, at night, I stop at the gate 8 times per night. Stop and start to shunt under and drop trailers plus traffic light stops on the road. I have been told the digi tach adds driving minutes everytime you stop. I went over on a 10th driving hour on a digi card and i am concerned ! Q: is there a way to get round this please ? If so please explain ! Thank you !

The digital tachograph rounds driving time up to the nearest minute, so if you start driving at 55 seconds past 10:00 the tachograph will count the driving time from 10:00, likewise if you stopped driving at 55 seconds before 11:00 the driving time will be rounded up to 11:00.
You can see from this that you’ve just lost nearly 2 minutes of driving, of cause this is an extreme example just to show why you lose time, but you can see that if you have to stop for a few minutes before starting again around 20 times during the shift you could probably expect to lose at least 5 minutes driving time in the shift and probably significantly more.
I believe the next generation of digital tachograph software will have this problem rectified but of cause that’s no real help to you at the moment I’m afraid.
To give you some idea of how inaccurate they are, I have stopped truck,applied handbrake, got out and locked cab, walked 100yds to kiosk, picked up paper, waited whilst customer in front is served, paid for paper, walked back to truck, unlocked it, climbed in, started engine, put seatbelt on , selected gear, released handbrake.
On completion of journey, the printout shows driving continuously. This has happened many times with different trucks.

I wouldn’t have this problem if my company didn’t push us so hard, and stretch my driving time. I enjoy working hard but I want my card to be infringement free, I would sleep easier as I love my job and take it seriously when a problem comes up ! Thanks again !
