VOSA won’t be bothered about you forgetting the card as long as you don’t make a habit of it, it’s a genuine mistake, these things happen so relax and enjoy what’s left of the evening
Completely disagree, i think they’ll be very bothered!
If you feel you need to just call up and report it lost, they wont even ask on the phone what happened, 19 quid down the drain but gets you out the [zb] and you’ll have clean card.
Is this sarcasm?
I can’t work it out, add some smilies.
Im being completely serious, if he gets stopped and tells them he’s forgotten his card that will not go down well one bit, failing to provide records is a serious offence. Im not suggesting he reports it lost but it is an option if he feels its necessary… If i was in his shoes i’d call up and see if someone could lend me the keys to the yard but of course this isnt always possible… Either way he’s made a mistake which will course a problem, ideas have been suggested so its up to him how he acts.
It clearly states in the legislation that if a card is “lost/damaged, stolen or not in possession” the driver can take a printout for upto 15 days. I’d say the OP was not in possession of his card.
We must be reading a different set of rules then.

Well folks Im here and well,
Did a vehicle printout this morning, wrote my dr lic number, signed it, recorded the opening mileage and signed it, plus manually recorded all activity throughout the day. Also did an end of day printout too and recorded the closing mileage. I will retain it in my cab for 28 days as we only have digi vehicles anyway.
Did 300 miles without a problem thank god, card was retrieved tonight, wont be making that mess up again!
Card always stays in the cab for me as we dont swap vehicles and our load for our drops is loaded up previous night (so no one else can take it). Plus permanent employer too.
Thanks for easing my worries folks.
I’m a little confused what you mean by “manually recorded all activity throughout the day”, the only manual entries you need to write on the printouts is any work that you did away from the vehicle, that would generally be work you did before taking charge of the vehicle, and any work you did after leaving the vehicle at the end of the shift.
A vehicle printout at the start of the shift will show the date and the vehicle mileage at that time, a vehicle printout at the end of the shift will show the vehicle mileage and again the date, all activities recorded on the tachograph between the two printouts which will show on the end of shift printout will be your activities for the shift.
Between the times of these printouts you just have to use the mode switch as usual to record your activities.
Sorry if I’ve misunderstood your post

Article 15 - (EEC) No 3821/85.
- Where a driver card is damaged, malfunctions, or is not in the
possession of the driver, the driver shall:
(a) at the start of his journey, print out the details of the vehicle the
driver is driving, and shall enter onto that printout:
- (i) details that enable the driver to be identified (name, driver card
or driver’s licence number), including his signature;
- (ii) the periods referred to in paragraph 3, second indent (b), (c) and
(d);
(b) at the end of his journey, print out the information relating to
periods of time recorded by the recording equipment, record any
periods of other work, availability and rest undertaken since the
printout that was made at the start of the journey, where not
recorded by the tachograph, and mark on that document details
that enable the driver to be identified (name, driver card or
driver’s licence number), including the driver’s signature.
To be fair I think in this article “not in the possession of the driver” probably means lost or stolen rather than left at home or in another truck, but that is what it says.
Ryan, how often does your company download the information from the card? Ours does it every day as part of the debrief and that way we always have the card on our person when we leave the vehicle. Doesn’t stop it being left in the office if distracted, hacked off or just plain senile.
Thing is our office is 24/7 so recovery is not really a problem.
I drive a different vehicle every day so have it in my wallet rather than in the truck. I do know of some with allocated trucks who leave it in there but wouldn’t trust someone else to take care of it while they use the truck.

Hi, we download the card every friday as a routine system, opposed to the required 28 days.
Well as i wasnt in possession of the card, il glady put myself under that bracket for the day. Im sure VOSA, would accept it as a first mistake which it was, aslong as you tell them first and not let them find out. Hey ho if they wanted the card i could of gone back and got it at that point in the day. All i have to do now is keep this paper printouts for 28 days, then i will hand it to the office for them to keep for 12 months. Ive played by the rules in the circumstance of what IF im not in possession.
Wont be doing that again, i just have my own allocated vehicle and a monday to friday job, i take it home with me at weekends but leave it just slightly pushed in the tacho slot during the week, so the next day i just push it all the way in.
