Hi all looking some advice for a new driver on correct usage of modes… do I use POA for example. sitting in a loading bay, waiting on a bay, ferry crossings etc or cross hammer. Cheers

Very broad rule-of-thumb:
If you are hourly paid (and you don’t get paid for all breaks) you’ll probably want to put it on POA.
If you are salaried, you’ll probably want to put it on Break (as it may mean you’ll be able to go home earlier).
Otherwise (or if unsure) just leave it on Other Work (crossed hammers).

I’ve found all the agencies/firms I’ve worked/limped for don’t care about what the Tacho says with regard to Breaks, they just want you to deduct 45 mins from your shift as your lunch break.
As a Newbie, unless you’re instructed to use POA it’s best avoided!!!
At least until you’ve got your head around the regs better…
Ive never used POA.Just other work for loading/unloading, daily checks etc and rest when due my break.
Thanks. Lots of mixed messages so still none the wiser lol. Surly vosa or the police want to see you using all your modes correctly. I have a run in the morning which requires me to drive 3hrs or more to catch a ferry. Would I be best to put it on rest whilst sailing or POA?.. I get payed by the day. Am I allowed to drive legally 9hrs a day regardless of how much time spent in POA, REST or CROSSED HAMMERS■■?.. if this is the case then surely I’m just explaining what I’m doing and when I’m doing it…

Police/VOSA(DVSA) won’t give a monkey’s chuff which mode you use to show time on a ferry. You could be working (planning the rest of your day’s driving, dealing with work emails, making phone calls etc), having a Break or simply “Waiting” to get back on with the job. What they won’t want to see is you recording a Break when in actual fact you were working (e.g. assisting with unloading).
In your situation (paid by the day) I’d simply stick it on Break for the ferry journey as that will (assuming the ferry crossing takes at least 45 minutes) reset your 4.5 hours’ drive time. Using POA will likely cause you grief and/or confusion as the tacho head will treat it as Break and reset your driving time.
With very few exceptions, the only reason to use POA is to allow you to be “at work” (and thus earning more money if paid by the hour) while not actually working. If paid by the day or salaried there is very little reason to use POA at all.
Provided you can fit in 9 or 11 hours’ daily rest within 24 hours of starting your shift, you can drive 9 hours a day every working day - It makes no difference whether the remaining shift time is spent working, on break or on POA.

This is true - but there are companies (and agencies) out there who pay according to what is recorded on the tacho.
Jax, what book is that? in your first picture, it references a flowchart, can you snap that too?

Hi its this
Got it from when I did a stint at Palmer and Harveys. It’s a useful book that I’ve hardly read tbh. Never really needed it though I should read it all tbh.
Here is the flow chart…
