“for 3 weeks work the money was quite good, take home was about £2200”

How is that kind of money made up exactly? I doubt if it’s basic pay and straight hours through…?

Even if it’s Euros rather than Sterling, £2200 for 3 weeks rather than 4 DOES seem good! :open_mouth:

you thinking of coming off benifits

What benefits would they be with me working every week?
I don’t feel the moral imperative to work a 50 hour week to net £350 thanks to excessive taxation & NI & Fuel costs when I can do half the hours and take home almost as much, merely using the tax system like middle class and rich people do. If that makes me a scrounger, then anyone highly paid is also a scrounger because they too are getting more money for working less hours. People on £60k still get child benefit. Part timers on less than £32k pro rata get tax credits. Pensioners on £100k still get a free bus pass. Think they should give such handouts back?

I feel the need to earn as much as I can for as few hours as I can, so I can spend quality time with my young family. Anyone who wants to work more hours for less money must either have already busted up their marriage, or intends doing so in the near future. Kids alienated from the dad they never see? Always breaking that promise to be home THIS friday? Running so bent that you could lose your livelihood, pay, or even your life at any moment for a whole raft of everyday reasons?

THESE are the socially irresponsible lifestyles way beyond the suggestion that claiming what one is entitled to might be.

hear hear, I’ve just landed ( pardon the pun) a job at my local airport, shift work, 29 hours per week and any shortfall in wages I’m going to claim through tax credits.
Worked over 50 hours per week for the last 25 years, I think I deserve something back.

It’s not theirs anymore,
This is our England now.
Paaaaarrrrrrttttttttyyyyyyyy

Is there now a glut of drivers hanging up their keys, and looking for a job in the office? There DOES seem to be a packed office on more occasions of late eh?
Does a retired driver really have prospects of “going to the RDC in the sky”? - Don’t ask me which one would be classed as “great” though!

There has been a few interesting programmes about older people this week, with the Nick and Margaret show from Amstrad and last night I watched June Brown (Dot Cotton) visit her screen husband / co-star in a nursing home. Jim Branning played a cocky cockney on TV. Last night the real man was as pitiful as a dying dog. It was awful to watch, not a soap fan by any means but I know who they are. June Browns daughters are quite fit though!

June Brown visited an Indian family who still had the family values and looked after their own, we should follow that, they followed us before.

Margaret Mountford and Nick Hewer were seen talking about the state of the country and what will happen when the 60 to 70 somethings retire or die. There is no work ethic left, there is no reason to work, free schools, college and then to Uni until you are 26, a year backpacking and then starting a family. Who wants to employ a single mother of 2 who has never had a job and can only work part time?

Most lads want to be a footballer, pop star or a drug dealer. I remember my own parents saying, get a trade, study, work hard. I did as I liked and ended up as an ex lorry driver who cannot work full time because of a collapsing body and bent chassis.

While I am feeling all despondent like this, where are we going to get the next batch of musicians from? The Rolling Stones. Pink Floyd. Iron Maiden. Motorhead. Led Zeppelin. Rod Stewart. Small Faces. Queen. AC-DC. Black Sabbath are all made up of pensioners. Somehow I cannot even see the boy bands surviving into adulthood!
