Evening all ,
quick question how long after your card is in can you put it on break ? ( Bed )
reason being we are picking up trailers from round the corner and I am there in literarily 5 mins but sat up to 2 hours waiting to be loaded.
Right away.

You need at least one minute driving time for it to class as a driving break.
And at least one minute of other work for it to class as a WTD break.

You can put the tachograph on break any time you like, but as has been said it won’t count as a driving break unless there’s at-least one minute of driving on the tachograph, it won’t count as a WTD break unless there’s at-least one minute of other work or driving.

Why on earth would you want to put it on break after 5 minutes? POA possibly, but a break?

Why not? If you’re paid regardless (as I am) why would you even bother with POA? All it does is muddy the waters and eventually bite you in the arse when it clears the drive time from your display and you miscalculate how much driving you’ve actually done and end up with an unnecessary infringement.

It isn’t rocket science…

+1
never used poa in my life as ive never worked for a pishy enough company to have had the need to do so.
if your a goody two shoes law abiding super trucker, shouldn’t it show 4 or 5 minutes other work after you put it in to show when your doing your walk round checks or sitting having a ■■■ and a coffee kidding on your doing them
I wanted to loose time at the docks today wile getting a new pass but thought unwise to use break as vosa where doing spot checks in the docks…

Why would you have to do that? No reason at all why you can’t put your card in (with appropriate manual entries to account for any work related activities - if any - since the card was last ejected) and then immediately put it on break (or POA). If there is no such “unrecorded” time then there is no reason at all why you cannot immediately switch to recording Break (or POA). If you are being a “goody two shoes” than your card should reflect what you were actually doing at the time in question.
If I know I’m going on a run where I’ll need a 45, (doesn’t happen all that often tbh) usually to Salisbury or Reading, then first thing in the morning I’ll pull the lorry forward to where I load it, which in reality is 5 seconds, but in tacho time is 1 minute, then stick it on break for 15 mins whilst I have a cuppa and chinwag. Once done, I’ll switch it back to other work, load up and go.
Then I only need a 30 later on. 30 mins seems to pass so much faster than 45.

Only on older digital tachographs - On more recent units 5 seconds of driving won’t register on the tacho.
On earlier units even one revolution of the wheels would cause the whole minute to be recorded as “driving”. More recent units only record “driving” if the wheels are turning for at least 30 seconds or so.

It will, its 15 minutes less. [emoji3]
