DHL Chep, Carrington (Manchester)

Retired Old ■■■■:
Quite a few years ago I joined Bratt’s from another local firm for a 15% increase in pay.
When I was employed on a contract involving multi-drop steel deliveries, the boss asked me to stay in the yard after I had checked, secured & sheeted my own vehicle in order to train up an agency driver who had never carried steel before. I didn’t appreciate this too much after getting up at stupid o’clock in order to miss the rush hour traffic, but when I learned that the agency chap was being paid 50% more than I was I had a quiet word with the office about my pay rates after 40-odd years experience. Of course, I was able to point the lad in (approximately) the right direction and give him a few warnings but we never saw him again!
On another occasion I was told to take a “new starter” out for the day to show him the ropes. It was only when we had got about an hour into the journey that I found out that, not only had the chap no HGV licence, but he was only twenty years old. When I dug a bit deeper, he said that he thought he could drive any four-wheeler on an ordinary car licence. I never found out which pillock in the office neglected to check his credentials before taking him on.
Having said all that, I found the Bratt family to be really nice, genuine people and had many good times when I was there.

I’ve heard bratt pays class 1 rates of around 6.50 an hour, that’s a [zb] liberty but if that’s true they probably are making more money than DHL !

you heard wrong

Kevwall:
Got rang today by the agency to work for Bratts and guess what for…to go into chep carrington in the morning haha

make sure you take your you take your sandwiches

Retired Old ■■■■:
You can bet your life that Bratt’s will have done a bit of price-cutting to get the job. Mind you, they have been providing Chep with a decent service for years so that could have swayed it. It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out after six months or so.

you would lose that bet and they have been working for chep for a good while now and always seem to get through the work they throw at us

Retired Old ■■■■:
If anyone’s got parking for 30 vehicles around Trafford Park they could make money by ringing Bratt’s!

why would we need 30 extra trucks when dhl cover it with 15 ■■?

DHL cover it with 22

Bl**dy H*ll, Gonzo- is that REALLY you?

yup been back a couple of years now keeps me out of mischief

All the best to you, matey. Give my regards to Dave and Steve and anyone else who may still be there.
I wonder who is Bratty’s “training officer” at H&P these days? And is he getting paid any more than I was? Presumably Old Shep is long retired, like me?

Minusses were that sometimes there would be a two-or-three hour wait to load/offload and that the facilities for drivers were non-existant. Has anyone used the toilets at the Chep depot near Birmingham Airport?

It seemed as though it was a bit of a given to have crap ■■■■■■■■ facilities at any Chep depot in the UK. I used to load plastics out of Oldbury and the toilets resembled a Bangladeshi back street :open_mouth:
