DfT want to hear what ADR drivers are doing

Government survey, five questions, takes no more than 30 seconds

I wonder why they are suddenly interested in what ADR licence holders are up to, especially as there is probably more people ADR qualified than ever before. Can’t say I’m aware of any noticeable shortage of drivers in the sector so it’s not like they need to get jobs filled, in fact there’s probably a good number of drivers holding a card that can’t find work in the sector as it’s slowly becoming over-saturated

Probably changes coming to the ADR course to ‘streamline’ it, three days will become three hours

I imagine it’s just a stats gathering exercise for some departmental report

4-5 day ADR training must be scraped. There enough 1 day basic training.Anyway drivers not do nothing with ADR safety.Somebody packing, somebody load pallets.drivers only only open sign and driver.More training required for some Van drivers with ADR who collect different load from costomer, hospital, need put in correct containers and more.

 Have a read of this and then create a proposal for DfT explaining how one day’s training is appropriate to the “responsibilities and duties” of the driver

ADR
1.3.1
Scope and applicability
Persons employed by the participants referred to in Chapter 1.4, whose duties concern the carriage of dangerous goods, shall be trained in the requirements governing the carriage of such goods appropriate to their responsibilities and duties.

I had ADR training in UK in Jcoates driving school. All required info, training can be done in 1 day easy. They teach to many what not needed for drivers.

If it’s intended to help government planning for any future fuel crisis, then it’s not the world’s smartest survey. No differentiation between tank and pack, or specific modules. Doesn’t even ask if you hold an HGV licence.

Maybe the parts specific to your job could be covered in a day, but they have to provide information that will cover a wide range of potential jobs.
Even still, the amount of ADR qualified drivers who don’t even know the basics is shocking. I know plenty of people who couldn’t tell you what safety equipment or documents they are supposed to carry on their vehicle. These things form a part of the daily walk round checks and they still don’t know it

You’re not wrong there Terry. I’ve seen currently qualified drivers who come to renew the certificate but they can’t even answer some basic questions from the Core module, let alone calculate whether a mixed load of TC’s 1, 2 & 3 are “in scope” or not.

My favourite was the guy who claimed he was already working as a tanker driver, but who came to renew just that one module (how does that work eh?) He was really cocky, reckoned he knew it all and shouldn’t have to do the classroom part of things as he could breeze through the exam, generally a crappy attitude all round.

Guess who, out of a group of ten (9 newbies and 1 “experienced”) was the only person to fail the tanks exam…
