On Friday evening I was delivering to a large DIY store in an artic. It was very badly designed firstly because you had to drive through the car park to get to the delivery area at the side of the store and secondly because there was nowhere to turn around once you got down their.
I decided the easiest way was to reverse straight back out and put the back of the trailer inbetween two parked cars that were about 3 parking spaces apart then turn hard right to get me to the exit.
So I done just that but when I turned hard right I couldn’t make the turn due to being too close to a parked car that was in front of me. So I reversed back a bit and put even more angle on the trailer but I was confident I could still make the turn.
I continued making the turn watching that the trailer wheels weren’t going to clip the parked car on my inside. Next thing I hear someone blairing the horn so I stopped where I was and got out to find out what was going on.
He was pointing at the corner of the trailer and as I walked round I was expecting to see it impaled in the side of the car. I was relieved to find it wasn’t but it was no more than the width of a ■■■ box away from it.
He came over and explained how he had been a lorry driver for 20 years And he was watching me because he didn’t think the turn could be made. I thanked him for warning me and for his advise and he directed me back on the blindside which I should have done the first time but as it was Friday evening I was just thinking of getting home and obviously wasn’t thinking straight.
I’ve been driving artics for about a month now and at the start I was very aware of the tailswing but I think I just got a little bit too cocky lately and that close call has knocked me right back down to earth. I’m just thankful that there just happened to be someone there that could see what was about to happen and warned me in time. I’m sure there is plenty who wish they could say the same.
At least he didn’t film you on youtube in your stobrat wagon
in b and q on friday
Aint nothing wrong with having some one help you, discretion over valour any time
Hat’s off to the bloke who tooted. A lot of people might’ve just filmed you clipping the car and putting it on YouTube
Hadn’t thought of someone filming me, if I ever see someone filming me driving I will honestly get out and bounce the camera off there head. No I wasn’t at b&q and no I don’t drive for stobratz.
There is a problem with a lot of these places because the building is built to a more or less standard design. Then it has to be fitted into the available space resulting in it being all arse about. Which is why the goods access is through the car park.
I deliver to hospitals regularly with artics, the amount of people that will sit in their car whilst you maneuver back and fro, inches from their car, in and out the cab ect then as soon as you’re past and counting your blessings… they drive away, I could FCEKING kill these B45T4RDS!!!
Nice to know someone is looking out for other people,

That would drive me nuts Some people have no consideration. I regularly deliver to a place where you have to reverse in off the main road and most of the time people will stop and wait until your off the road but you still get the odd impatient dicks that will do anything to get by rather than wait a few seconds.

Yeah it does annoy me, sometimes I react childishly - Few months ago, going round a hospital with a artic, turning left at a junction, a tiny junction, looked up into the road I was turning into it was clear, started the turn, right over the other side of the road, trying not to scrape the railing, bout half way round and a young woman driving a mini drives right up to my bumper, gives me a look as if to say “My side of the road you move!!” I gave her a few seconds to reconsider, she just sat there, I switched it off, grabbed the paper work and jumped out the cab, she looked at me as if to say “WTF is happening” I walked round to the loading area, handed in the paper work, explained there was a situation, walked back and she had gone. Another time in a similar circumstances a old woman drove up to the front of the truck mid way round a tiny junction in a hospital, but I felt like she couldn’t actually see much further past her bonnet, so was understandable lol
