Derby to Pinoso (Alicante region)

Having just passed my “C” test I thought I’d do a trip diary of my most recent, and maybe last, trip to Spain in my sprinter van…

Day 1

I left my house on the Wirral at about half 12 Sunday lunch time, heading for Derby, being a sunday I thought I’d risk the M6, which proved to be a good gamble as the traffic was completely free flowing. I arrived at the yard in Derby about half 2, 3’o’clock-ish, saw the boss-man, did my vehicle checks, collected my petty cash euros, and was away by about half 4, half an hour later I was southbound on the M1 heading for the chunnel. Knowing about the widening works at the bottom of the M1, I was in 2 minds as to whether I should come off, and hit the A14/M11 or stay on the M1, I had plenty of leeway as far as my train was concerned, as I was booked on the cheap rate gone midnight crossing. I decided to stay on the M1 and risk it, but my luck held the works weren’t too slow. Next stop is my Brothers house, he lives just off the M25, so it is a convenient stop point, I was there for about half 7, 8’o’clock, which gave me 2-3 hours to chill, chat and neck some serious ammounts of coffee! Leaving at about 11’o’clock I was arriving at check in by quarter past 12. I then had an hour to sit around before making my way to pass port control at ten past 1.

This is were I hit my first hold up, I rolled down onto the platform, sat there for a bit then the shutter started closing on th train! What about me I thought, There was 2 other vans on the platform with me, and eventually we were ushered up and off the platform, and back round into the post-passport queing area. Where I was told th next train wasn’t untill 10 past 3.

Needless to say I was mighty annoyed at this, so I complained, and because of my mouth I got an eat-as-much-as-you-want voucher for the terminal, and the cost of my trip refunded, fair enough. Once through the tunnel, I got to the first aire on the A26/E15 and called it a night.

Day 2

I woke about 8am french time, and continued on my way south via Paris, Orleans, Chateauroux, Limoges, Montauban and Toulouse, what is there to say about this leg of my trip, uhr… it takes a long time? France, at least the France i see off the toll-roads, is just so boring, I keep to 130kmh at watch the kilometers to go drop off my satnav, at the same time as giving my iPod a serious work out.

(this photo is from a previous trip, but I like it that much I added it anyway!)

Anyway when I reach Toulouse I don’t head towards Perpignan and Barcelona, I hook a right up the A66/E09 and cross the Pyrenees via Foix, Ax-les-thermes and the 2 toll tunnels, crossing the border at Bourg-Madamme, then heading south towards Barcelona, I got just south of Barcelona on the AP7/E15 near Tarragona. Here I stopped for the second time.

Day 3

Woke in the services about 8ish,to the sight of a, IMO, seriously overloaded old Merc van.

I had my breakfast of a Boccadillo and coffee, washed up, and continued heading south, passing Valencia then coming off the AP7/E15 to pick up the A7/A35 inland towards Almansa, I was stuck in an almighty traffic jam here, caused by roadworks at the bottom of a particularly steep hill, which the loaded artics were doing about 15kph up. I actually thought this dude was real, 'cos its arm was moving!

Once I got through that I was headed into the area were I was pulled last trip by the Guardia Civil, for not having a Hi-Vis vest hung over my passenger seat, they lightened me by €105 for that! By now I was only 30 minutes from my fianl destination. I turned off onto the A31 south towards Monovar, which I finally leave at the CV83 which takes me to my destination of Pinoso.

You thought he was real■■?
He’s MUCH to pale to be a road worker :unamused:

The first one of those I saw was stood on the central reserve of an Autostrada, but had a broken arm. So the arm and flag were hanging limp with just the shoulder shrugging up and down. I was rather concerned about the fella stood there, till I got a bit closer. The French use them too.

Good diary though.

At least, I thought he was real 'till I got close too him!!!

I didn’t see any sign of 'works before him, apart from the traffic, then there he is waving in the middle of the road!

So the arm and flag were hanging limp with just the shoulder shrugging up and down

That raised a giggle

The one I saw at least had a sun tan. :open_mouth:

How long did your trip take

hey niall a good read,i see quite a few firms send vans across the water now .do you have one of them hatcher bunks in yer van

One of these? Yes  However it’s too small widthwise, and uncomfortable, the strap digs into my arm, so I sleep across the seats!!

How long did your trip take

I left my house midday Sunday and arrived midday Tuesday.

I cant believe the load on that merc van :open_mouth: thats like something out
of India !

i am amazed at the 105 euro fine for no hi-viz on the back of the seat.
this is crazy.
i havnt been to spain for 7 or 8 years, but i heard things have changed down there.
i know a haulier in ireland got a 4000 euro fine before christmas.
the driver took a 15 min and a 30 min break in the wrong order.
how spain has changed since i first went there in the late 70s,sometimes with and sometimes without permits.
threw the tacho away every day along with the rubbish.
how things have changed, and not for the better.

Good diary though.

First time I saw one of those guys with waving arm; I was on a motorway crossover, through road works. I was concentrating on the crossover 'cos usually they’re a bit ‘rough’ and this guy appears in my headlights waving his flag; ‘tom ■■■’ me up big time.

Great idea for slowing traffic down though . Should have 'em over here.

Did you get nicked for not having a high viz vest , or not having one on the passenger seat ?. Nice to see another Spur’s fan , where did you get the logo thing ?

a nice read and great photos as well

Those waving arm roadworks men have been around for years, in France & Italy at least, I was stuck in a jam north of Ressons when they were, I think, making the A1 into 3 lanes & one of the group I was running with got out of his lorry & swapped the red flag for a Union Jack

One of the same gang did similar to one in Italy, when they were making the motorways 3 lanes before the world cup in 1990, except this time he used a pair of frilly knickers  Why he had frilly knickers in his cab I have no idea :open_mouth:
