Someone told me (always the opening to a good story), maybe a year ago that the AB govt were considering trialing turnpikes with 3 53” trailers. Don’t suppose you know if that was true or was I being fed BS?

I would imagine that would be quite restrictive though to the main highways

the nodding donkey:
I think that most of you misunderstand what is involved in driving one of these. These will only be driving between depots, on motorways and major roads. Not going for deliveries (other than possibly a very few selected RDC’s) or collections, simply because most locations s dont have the infrastructure (room) to accommodate them. Apart from being a bit more aware at junctions and roundabouts, the driver wont be doing any more work.

Whether he’s doing any more work or not in terms to justify him not getting paid that little bit more is irrelevant ND.
If you’re doing the same trunk every day with a standard outfit, then you’re told tomorrow you’re doing the sane run with 2 trailers, you can sure as hell bet your firm is getting a substantial increase on the rate,.so why should the driver of the vehicle not get a bite of the cherry.?
Before anybody compares that with single and double deckers, apart from watching the height it’s completely different to driving one of those things.

Just to clarify my case on here for the hard of thinking who have commented :unamused: …As I said, I’ve no doubt I would have the ability, but not the notion,.aka couldn’t be arsed/no interest.

It will start with the crisps, insulation and bogroll brigade - light weights ,double up the trailers and still be below 44 ton . It will be put over as “efficency” making use of the weight limits to maximise vechile use and then when they prove it can be done the weight limits will rise and just like the double deckers and longer length trailers there will be a line of yes men lined up to drive them for the glory and money will never be mentioned . Once that happens its a take or leave it type sitation - so and so did it for no extra so why can’t you. At that point it’s to late .

Spot on.

That Denby thing is a waste of time … just get a 4950 mm high non ecoroof LST double deck … gives you a payload of circa 25 tonnes which would be considerably higher than the Denby thing. Volume may be a bit less ?

Only 6 airbags / tyres / brakes to maintain and fits in all the service areas / hubs and you haven`t got a redundant front master trailer on your hands

mess up - nothing to see here - move along now .

Saskatchewan allowed loblaw supermarket to run three 53ft trailers between Regina and toon town saw one once not a good idea I recon. No idea if still running

Bit of a monster.

How many of us received a pay rise when gvw rose from 32.5t to 38t and again up to 44t?

No-one, of course, but let’s not let facts get in the way of a rant.

I expect some time in the distant past when deckers were first introduced there was similar “you won’t get me driving that for the same money” rants on here.

Maybe, I was hauling juice around there in may for the season and saw a few COOP tractors pulling a 53” then a full superB behind that around circle drive which I had never seen before. I know Walmart are pulling some 60” trailers now as I pass a few on the QE2 between Edmonton and cow town

Presumably the front trailer can only be unloaded from the side, no way could you get it onto a bay. In which case you might as well have a Swedish type Wagon and Drag, possibly with a demount body on the prime mover.

Probably shouldn’t have posted this! Countdown clock running before a certain person replies. Sorry

Sliding axle as per a Shelly would do the trick

Me and my mate of some 35 years working together have always joined or left car transporting as and when the wages paralleled much easier supermarket type daywork.
Not working a skilled mucky or grafting (often all three combined) job for the same pay as those who back on a bay any fool could manage and let others do the real work, never have and never will.
If the present job gets overtaken pay and terms wise by permanent supermarket type work i’ll be the first putting me notice in, assuming there’s no in cab cameras on said supermarket op which is my own personal line in the sand.

So for those of you who think it’s unreasonable and petty for drivers expecting that little bit extra sweetener, bite of the cherry, (on a rate that would be increased by …top of my head 40 to 50%, to the haulier.)
Are you saying that …because you reckon there is no more extra ‘skill’ involved or needed, than changing from a standard trailer to a decker? abd that those 2 scenarios are the same?
Ok…
So as a operator, if you had 2 outfits to go out on trunk,.and a fully experienced driver and a driver who had six months under his belt, you would have zero qualms about putting the new driver on the twin trailer outfit?
I’d sure as hell bet you’d put the seasoned driver on it for the reasons I have pointed out.

I hear ya but I think that will be the least of your worries soon as you’ll need ‘papiere, bitte’ before you can even get in the gate. :open_mouth:

Not a problem, just like pubs restaurants or any other business or trade that wants my money, if they want my labour and they come the modern gestapo/stasi ■■■■■■■■ and i’m outa there, i’ll just retire and that’ll create a role for one of the boat people they’ll probably soon be throwing licences at.

Good post. I am wondering what do they do with all of these boats and outboard engines. Must be a stack of them all somewhere. Possibly fix them up and make them seaworthy & send them back in them and include a pack of flares.

Of course, and that was exactly my thought when it first reared its head, but you as well as I do that it won’t stop there. It’s the usual function creep, start off with something that won’t affect too many people, just to test the waters and note the response. Wait for inevitable backlash and uproar, then wait a few more months for it to die down and people to get used to the idea, then implement the next step.

What you gonna do when you GP says no jab, no service? What you gonna do when all the food stores says no jab, no entry?

Said it before and i mean it, this is a hill i’m prepared to die on.
There’s more of us about than they might like, we can’t be bought or bribed or blackmailed and we certainly ain’t going to take part in some bloody experiment because our soddin PM, who couldn’t tell the truth to save his miserable skin, dangles some polished turd of a carrot in front of my nose, insisting if i just do this small thing i can have my freedom back…he never took my freedom it wasn’t his to steal, other people surrendered theirs.

Jesus wept, this is supposed to be a conservative govt, who abjectly failed to conserve anything, it’s been useless since John ‘over the desk Edwina’ Major and that bloody streak of urine Cameron put the final nails in its coffin.
