Quick question about this stuff . I understand its methalyated spirits but how does this fall under the ADR regs ? Looks like a local distillery maybe starting to produce it and it would have to be transported out for bottling in 27500, 30000 liter tanks . ADR required ?
I would imagine it coming under the same classification as Industrial Ethanol UN 1170. Class 3. But Dave will be along when he gets down off his cross with chapter and verse.
I was drawn to this post by the word alcohol, thought it was some kind of new beer.
As said, Dave is yer man, he’s feeling a bit Tom & ■■■■ at the moment after stuffing himself with chocolate eggs but he’ll be on soon.
I to am here under false pretences, will bow to Diesel Dave’s superior knowledge in this area of alcohol related shenanigans.
Edit: For anything else unnatural I’m probaby your man…
Like the Oirish I am working on a way to remove the dyes and bitters from Meths, the kid next door has a Mamod steam boiler and a gallon of denatured. He was crying when I snatched it off him but my need is greater, he can put petrol in it [emoji23]

Until Dave comes by with greater detail: Denatured alcohol is ethanol (flammable liquid, Class 3) which has had been mixed with additives, eg methanol (class 3 with class 6.1 subsidiary hazards) or some other toxic substance added to it.

Hi beefy4605,
From the topic title and the info you’ve given, the substance in question DOES count as dangerous goods.
If carried by tanker or tank-container, the driver will need an ADR card valid for the carriage of UN Class 3 in tanks.
Please also note that an expired ADR card and/or expired ADR technical test on the tank can be used in the circumstances described here:

Hi Zac_A,
That’s correct, but we’d need a UN number and an up-to-date MSDS before any other details could be given.
Denatured Alcohol (if that name is correct?) has SIX possible entries in ADR, all of which are N.O.S. entries, hence my caution.
If we’re speaking of just the Ethanol on its own (maybe because that’s what somebody happens to ‘call’ it,) then that has 2 possible names and 2 entries in ADR.
All I can say for sure at this point is that an aqueous solution of Ethanol (UN 1190) is not subject to ADR if the alcohol by volume is **<**24%.

Thanks Dieseldave I haven’t any more details . It was a loose conversation in the yard that a certain distillery might be starting to produce alcohol for use as hand sanatiser . I was just wanting to get a few facts regarding the haulage in case we were offered the haulage of it .

That’s no problem Beefy, the answer is still that it’s dangerous goods, so you’d need an ADR card as I’ve described above.
