Evening chaps… I’ve got a delivery in Devizes at the Roundway 2moro morning, it’s an emergency delivery and have to be there quite early before the company’s vehicles leave… now my query is, what’s the best route in?. I know where devizes is, as used to do deliveries to places like trowbridge, bradford on avon, melksham etc… but never kwent near or through devizes itself, plus it’s been a fair few years since I’ve been down that neck of the woods as I’m mainly based in and around London nowadays. Any help on route info would be much appreciated.
Where are you coming from?
Purfleet Essex. In an artic tanker… was gonna go the way I used to go when I done deliveries to trowbridge down the A303, A36 to Westbury then towards devizes. But it’s quite a hilly so don’t want to cook my brakes.
I’d go M4 junction 15 and head south towards Marlborough. At Marlborough hang a right at the first roundabout and onto the A4 towards Calne and then down the A361.
At least that way it brings you into Devizes where all the industrial estates are. No weight limits and no low bridges.
No tite bends, or loads of winding bits then?. The other way I was looking at was off at jct17, down to chippers then chuck a left towards devizes?. But the route you mention sounds alot quicker and easier.

What can’t you negotiate bends then ? Follow the route Bacon gave you that’s the best.
m4 jct 15 thats the easiest way i always find coming from bristol otherwise you got lost of steep hills dropping down past bath

Yeah I can negotiate tite bends etc… I just don’t wanna cook my brakes having to constantly slow down. It’s my first drop of the day so be fully loaded with 25k of adblue. And Renaults don’t have the best brakes either.

Knowing my firm, they would send me in that direction on Friday then send me back into London for 4 more drops. [emoji38]
I think the only reason why I’m having to do this delivery in devizes is because our west Bromwich depot can’t get their tanker down to it, as it’s their area anyway.

Go on then, which Renault?
Drove for years around that area (milk tankers, both bulkers and trunkers), and never cooked my brakes. But I know what you mean, it is possible. The trunkers from west Wales used to litter the entrance of Westbury Dairies with the little yellow wheel but arrows… They used to drive like tools though.

Premium [emoji30]. No matter how easy i take it getting to Sutton in Surrey, the brakes on the unit would still glow… even the old volvo fe rigid I had once used to cook it’s brakes… you literally had to stand on the pedal, even when cold. I’ve just gotta be at this drop by six at the latest otherwise I’ve gotta wait till 8. And I’ve still gotta got to NW london then to Tilbury. I’ll still be 21k ltrs loaded when I leave devizes, so just wanna give myself the best route in/out bit also the quickest.
The advice to go J15, down to Marlborough and right to Devizes is your best bet. Only tight bit is Marlborough. Industrial estate you need is on your right as you enter Devizes.
Premium… You have my deepest sympathy…

Thanks mate… I shall use that route then… and the premium ain’t that bad… well the gearbox anyway [emoji38] .
Just like to say thanks to you chaps for the heads up on the route into devizes… Was actually quite a nice easy route, took it nice a gentle due to the fog patches and slightly wet roads, but definitely be using that way in again. Once again, thanks lads…[emoji106] [emoji106]
Buy me a coffee and we’ll call it quits. Ok?

All this talk of cooked brakes , no exhaust brake on a premium ?
Mikey D:

Why of course… but as those who drive premiums know the exhaust brake is next to useless. Too strong at low speeds and too weak at high speeds. Would be more effective sticking your leg out the door and putting your foot on the ground like a bike…
The two stage engine brake on my 460 Premium is excellent.
44tonnes all the time with a tank trailer too and scarcely
use the foot brake except for emergencies and actually coming to a halt. A wee dab here and there is all that’s neccesary even when running through mid Wales or central London. Just the same as the Volvo’s they were designed on (It is a Volvo engine and VEB set up anyway).
