Delivering tractor units, US style

A friend of mine recently had the opportunity to drive a relatives car from Boston to LA. He did a blog and on it was this photo which was quite intriguing. Apparently they use some kind of frame effort on the fifth wheel on each of the units to lift up the front end…

Quite a common sight over here. The front cross member of the tractors are secured to the fith wheel of the front vehicle. It’s just a regular way to transport new trucks, they do it with rigids to (without the body fitted obviously).

Hiya…where do they put the front wheels…not in the cab…do they…yes i’ve seen the in canada many times
John

They also use a bar type set up as well which connects 2 fifth wheels and has a hydraulic pump and ram
which lifts the rear one, so no need to pull the half shafts.
There’s even a bar one which has wheels and you tow it behind a small pick up. Lock it into 5th wheel 1, drive pick up onto it,
back truck 2 into it and lift the pick up and truck 2 up. Deliver units, hook up and got to next job

Conor, from the look of them it’d be tempting to throw a bucket of water over them!

Regarding the question about the wheels … This photo is the first time I have seen them with the wheels removed ! Every time I have seen them all the front wheels are fitted, they don’t interfere with anything.

Those crazy 'Mericans.

Read about this in the paper yesterday:

Obviously a stereotype in itself but still funny.
