Delivering to Whitehaven

Off to Jacobs Engineering, Whitehaven today, Sally the Satnav says M6-J36-A590-A5095-A595, but one of our drivers tells me the coast road is a bit tight, so thought I’d go M6-Penrith-A66-A595, but Sally won’t route me that way ?

Checked my Philips Truckers Atlas & can’t see any problems, carrying empty electrical cabinets, about 5 ton nett wt, the trailer is 14’10", are there any low bridges or restrictions on this route or is the coast road ok.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I could use a spare 70u if available

It’s not tight, but it’s pretty twisty and it’s a long road. If you had the road to yourself it’d be a nice run but you’re bound to get stuck behind a car doing 30mph and you’ve not chance of getting past it along there. If going in the daytime I’d look at going to Penrith and across the 66. I would bet that there’d be nothing much in it time wise.

Staying on the d/c past Kendal and continuing on the A591 through Ambleside and Keswick is another option (though not in the summer holiday season :open_mouth: ). I used to do that road regularly and it’s pretty decent for most of it. That would be quicker than going along the 595 imho. Depends whether you’re a typical RDC motorway trunker that panics if you have to leave a motorway or whether you’re got some tipper driver in your blood in which case you’ll be at home on the 591/595.

The coast road is doable but it is a bit tight in places, I’ve done it in an artic a few times, I’d use the 66 if I were you it’s quicker and less hassle

Maybe Sally won’t route you across the 66 Martin but until such a time as she does your washing, cooking and performing ■■■■■■ favours then she (unlike your wife) can be safely ignored.

Sure, like your wife she’ll moan and ■■■■■ for a while, but unlike your wife you can safely gag her. Anyway, just like your wife by the time you’re on the 66 she’ll have changed her mind and will happily reroute you from there.

To sum up; coast road plus high performance motorcycle equals fun, A66 plus artic equals good sense!

Btw, was that you inFarmfoods Shirley yesterday lunchtime Martin?

Its nice on the coast but I was running up early morning
and at 4 mtrs so I would be inclined to go 66 and down.

As for Sally or Saskia it aint brain surgery to ignore her.

Thanks Guys, 66 it is then, just leaving MK now, so they’ll get it in the morning.

Yes Moaster, that was me, I was having a Lazy Day-training a new driver, we got told off for not sitting in the canteen & not hearing the call for our notes, lol.
what was you in ?

Me no Comprende’

To Whitehaven from anywhere outside the immediate district I’d use the A66. It’s longer but all the roads are high-quality, which the coast road isn’t. A look at a map tells you all you need to know. Look at the traffic news before you go, though (or from the nearest service station to where the two routes split) in case it’s taking you that way to avoid a major delay (that’s if your sat-nav has access to traffic information).

To avoid it annoyingly telling you to turn back when you’ve passed Kendal, only turn it on when you’re halfway along the A66.

I was in the Norberts big cab Actros pulling a fridge. Saw there was two of you in the cab so left you alone.

Btw, you shoulda gone to the canteen; chunks of chicken in BBQ sauce and chips/rice plus a drink for £3. Every little helps!

Edit to add; just got off the phone to a mate who does loads of van work for your lot out of MK, he quoted for a hotshot to southern Spain, 2000 mile round trip. To say he got underbid doesn’t quite cover it, the EE who got it quoted £450!. That’s for a hotshot! But that’s for a different thread methinks.

We did pop in while waiting for a bay, but I won’t get dinners from canteens, too much temptation & I really could do with loosing a couple of stone. (Get more on the wagon without worrying about being overweight-Ha Ha !)

Wow that’s cheap, I don’t get involved with office stuff, but that sounds like a groupage rate, someone’s gonna get a Smacked Arse somewhere along the line on that job.

Heard a funny story yesterday (re deserving a smacked arse) we had a crate that had to be in Inverness (at a heavy price) at a specific time, customer rings up & asks “where’s our crate” (in a Scottish accent) after making a few checks they found it in our warehouse in MK !
Apparently they had a Helicopter waiting to take it out to an oil rig !!!
We ended up paying around 11 Grand to hire another helicopter a couple of days later, to complete the job !

Ouch ! That would have made someone’s eyes water after Mr Barley finished with his Slipper.

Via Penrith is a lot quicker if you are in a hurry but the scenic route is a nice drive, there is only one bad bit at Grizebeck where you would not want to meet another truck for about half a mile. And certain times of day shift change at Seascale creates a bit of traffic.

I took a little Vito up to Whitehaven, went around the coast going there, got a clear run which was nice. Then I thought it’d be rude not to do the Hardknott Pass on the way back which was amazing!

Penrith > A66 is the best way for an Artic by a mile. No low bridges or major problems.

Coast is a crap road at the best of times, mental tipper drivers and a lot of twisty bits.

Ambleside > Keswick is 7.5T weight limit so no good sadly.

Use m6/a66.
Used to live in kendal and went up to Whitehaven alot in a 7.5t wrecker. Nearly always went m6 onto a66.
Is quicker and easier then the coast road. Unless you want a long tiring drive with muppet car drivers trying to re model ya bumper.

Definitely up to the A66,especially if you have a bit of weight on and the roads are wet,we used to deliver to Gosforth 1st drop in a Artic fully loaded, used to always go the coast road as we travelled up early morning…that was until I got stuck on the bank by the castle hotel, real sharp left hand bend on a steep incline so not chance of a run up to it!
Time wise it’s literally about 5-10 mins longer going A66 but far more relaxing and you’ll arrive with both mirrors attached

Muncaster, as I call it the Island… Same in the lesser powered works vans, can’t get a run due to the bend so it’s 2nd gear by the time your near the top.
