Delivering Clothes to Town Centre !Nightmare

Hi everyone,
I’m new Class 2 and I’ve worked with this company for 2 days now and they so keen to give me from temp/perm basis job. The job is fine But some Town Centre have narrow road with cars parked both side including the bus, cyclists, pedestrians…etc who would not make your life easier. The other thing most of them needs their stuff delivered at their back door freaking nightmare. I’m honestly thinking not to go for it and look for some other jobs around. My question is Should I go for it or not?

If they are DESPERATE for you to go perm, ask yourself why that might be?
They PROBABLY will use and abuse you, which is why they PROBABLY want you to go perm, as they can’t keep drivers…
So (if it was me) I’d happily go along with them for a little while, but at the same time looking for greener grass!

What’s the money/work ratio, as that’s normally governs most people…

Agreed, but a zero experience Newbie has to start somewhere to build their CV…

Sounds like CEVA I know they do class 2 to clothing shops or as said possibly Sports direct.
As for driving to shops then if you can’t handle getting around town centres and buses/pedestrians then think hard about tour choice of work. I have done retail deliveries in an 18 tonner to the tightest town centres and it isn’t that difficult as long as you take your time and watch what you are doing. Quite often you need to assess the roads ahead and sometimes have a walk around first.

Yep +1 on the walk round bit and also if you can back in or turn around straight away as you’ll all ways get some git park where you want to turn other wise

yep it’s an 18t, and the deliveries are timed and have felt rushed on my second day which put me under a lot of stress and Company is Clipper Logistics.

Yep I’ll definitely do that.Tks a lots mate.

How long have been doing the job?
What sort of deal have they offered you to go permanent?
What are the other permanent driver like?
Do they have a high staff turnover?

The first full time driving job I had was multi drops round the UK with an artic. Could be a load of drops in a city or in the middle of nowhere, both types of work had their challenges.
loads of tight spots and as it was a tilt trailer (Look that up  ) you either had to drag the pallets to the back of the trailer on whatever type of dodgy pallet truck they gave you or strip the sides out.

That along with the culture shock of the of early starts and long hours, I hated it, thought I’d made the biggest mistake in my life, Well for the first month or so, then it seemed to click and I found myself enjoying the job, well on most days, I enjoyed the challenge of getting into the tight delivery places and I knew many of them by then, so I knew the best technique, and because they were small places I got to know the people at the delivery places. Even got he odd cup of tea at some places and I was working with a good bunch of lads, not just the other drivers, but the warehouse and office staff, loads of ■■■■ taking though. And a good boss who is now a good mate, got him into a fair few motorsport events and he even double manned a truck back from Portugal with me a couple of years ago, which was great as the bloke gave me my break into truck driving.

I thought the job was far better than sitting in an RDC for hours, and feeling as welcome as a ■■■■ in a lift.

Opps  rambled on there a bit, it’s an age thing.

My point is give it time to learn the job before you write it off as crap in the first few days, it might suit you , it might not. But you won’t know that in the first few days of the job.

Don’t rush, regardless of the delivery times, the speed will come as you get to know the job and the delivery points, but whatever happens goods can be re-delivered.

Well said Muckles, I kind of took it for granted that it’s a crap job from what the OP said…

Those first couple of weeks of class VAN  are a bit of a nightmare for a Newbie, as you’re ■■■■■■■■ yourself worrying about whether you’ll be able to get in and out of a lot of the drops. But within a few weeks or a month that passes, and before you know it’s you’re having a good laugh to yourself about some of the locations, and enjoy the challenge of solving the puzzle!

Is it clipper in Ollerton by any chance where your based?

They are notorious for bad employment, think Sports Direct cousin, so dont expect them to care much about you but unless you’ve got better options I’d go for the job as it gives experience and you can always quit.

Would agree it can be a nightmare getting around towns, but if you can do that without crashing into anything its a good thing to take to new employers showing you can control the truck in difficult circumstances.

Best advice I can personally give from another newbie - dont panic, take your time and screw the timings. It takes a lot longer to fill out an accident form than you lose by being careful. They might moan but you’re obviously good enough so secretly they know they cant really get rid of you if your a bit slower.

PS: Bet it hasnt taken you 2 hours to do the last mile.

Town centres can be a nightmare tbh but how much is new driver nerves or where you have to get, done shop work since I got my licences yes they can be a pita but its experience no matter where you deliver to.
Google maps are your friend in towns knowing what your looking for can be a massive help, most of our shops are back door delivery some down stupid side streets cars vans etc but take your time and get out and look,it will click just have to give it time.
Shop deliveries will be the same no matter who you work for,bad enough in a class 2 but trying to find my way round St Helen’s last week with a decker wasn’t fun but early Sunday was a bit quieter.

Good advice as always  . I hated it at first. It was a combination of them working me like a Blackpool donkey and the fear of the unknown. Give it chance. After a few weeks two things happened. A) I thought stuff the workload and I’m taking it steady wether they like it or not, what gets done gets done, cos when you rush, mistakes happen. And B) it got easier as I learned the routes. As has been said, reverse in if possible, and if you’re not sure, park up get out and have a walk. It’s no fun reversing out onto a road. Good luck

Always good advise everytime i post a subjects in the forum i really appreciate tks you for all supports.
I took your advise and did had a go for 4 days but they didn’t like it because i was too careful. But for them “too slow” . I’ve REALLY ENJOYED the last 2 days and felt more and more confident around town. Overall it was a hard job,6-7 drops upto 150 blue boxes and approx. the same amount to collect empty. Some shops have their storage at their top floor. So the driver should take the whole deliveries from the truck to upstairs with a very little help from shop staff. I was sweating like a pig till my pants got wet it so embarrassing…lol. Now just waiting for my next call

Sounds like they weren’t getting the right “mug” vibes from you pal, and want to move on to the next…
Just as you can, but now with a little bit of experience, now you’re just damp behind the ears!

Best of luck with your next gig…

Agree again, as long as the handballing bit isn’t too excessive it will eventually become a doddle once you get to know the runs/places etc and pick up some tips and tricks or your own methods for delivering whichever product/item it is etc and organising return stuff etc.

Class 2 multi drop day work is a bit marmite really, some will last days others are happy doing it for years. Plenty work out there, just find something that best suits your own personal circumstances in terms of work/life/salary/hours etc etc.
