Hi,

I am sure I remember, when I was very young, it must have been very early sixties, Deighton Brothers coming to see a van we had up for sale, at W.H.Williams Spennymoor They didn’t buy it but I can remember I liked the way they had their logo at the time. A d with a b below and Deighton Brothers witten next to them.I tought it was very modern at the time. Am i correct or am I dreaming?

Best wishes, and hope you get more photos

Carl

Hi Crowbar,

Thanks for asking, I’m not too well, how are you. Time goes by so quickly.

Deighton Brothers signwriting set out al those years ago stayed with me throughout my haulage days.

More than often I wanted to give ou livery a more modern look, and Deighton’s all those yeas ago was right fr the time , I thought… I surpose always putting W.H.williams in a brown rectangle with white writing was influenced from that.
I never realy was sucsessful at giving us a modern image but as time went on our old traditional signwriting became more unique.
Best wishes
Carl

Ralph, I remember the time you were called out with the Scammell to recover a car that had been driven over the cliffs at Marsden Grotto, If I recall correctly it got stuck on the steps halfway down. The Scammell made the job look easy, that winchrope must have been 2inches in diameter !! I dont think it did the wooden steps much good, For anyone who doesn’t know the area that cliff is 100ft high. regards Kev. Ps. pity you didn’t have a camera with you.

Kevin l recall the job very well as it took three men or a Landrover to pull out the rope, and l do not like heights there was one thing certain the old Scammell always did the job it never took prisoners. It would travel any where no matter what the ground conditions. hope to see you on Saturday night at the stream do. Ralph
