scanny77:
im going against the grain here and posting about one company that is precisely the opposite to the usual stuff.
driver sacked for something falling off the back of the trailer he was told to move. he is NOT a class 1 driver.
a one way system for the staff car park that the boss ignores and drives the wrong way round
they get a bit upset if you dare to walk into the warehouse without a hiviz vest (not required in the yard though) on but they allow untrained staff to use forklifts
they have security people who drive unmarked cars and have the power to stop and search any company vehicle but they dont tell their agency staff about them. does anyone here think i would stop for them? not only that but these security people will pursue any company driver who fails to stop and will try to get in front of them to stop them. that kind of behaviour is likely to result in them getting rammed off the road if i happen to be driving the artic and i have warned them that i will ram first and ask questions later
i wont mention who i am talking about but it aint tesco
Blunder Man:
Yet again a saddo starts a rant about when to wear or not to wear a HI-VIZ jacket, who cares?, have you really nothing better to do on a ferry than sit there eyeing up who’s wearing what?, you are lorry drivers not bloody fashion critics for God’s sake, and you could try minding your own business as well.
The same numpty object’s to training because he has done it 14 years and he knows everything, I have done it over 20 and I don’t.
If you came with that attitude to me you would be swiftly shown the door[zb].
That’s a little harsh Blunderman,
I can see the point of the original post. There are firms who I’ve worked for in the past who’ve actually credited me as a driver with a degree of intelligence, that there will be tasks that I should be able to figure out and perform myself without intervention from the company. Then there are others who had to ‘train’ me on how to operate a two button tail lift, diesel a lorry and operate a pallet truck. I’ve even got the copies of the paperwork to say I was trained in these areas!
It does wind me up a bit that we are not credited with that degree of intelligence by some. BUT I feel that drivers have to share the blame… How many have tried to get out of doing something by saying “I’m not trained” it’s your fault if I hurt myself doing this… I’m not talking about proper drivers, I’m talking about the modern breed of steering wheel attendants who can’t or won’t do anything unless being shown how to do it.
This culture of training course and petty rules is not just present in haulage. Many companies, especially larger ones, have numerous training course and rules, it’s not really there to benefit you or me, but to cover them if something happens and to satify the ego’s of large groups of petty mined middle managers who need to feel they have power over others to make thier pathetic little lives worth while.

and where [zb] did i say i know it all■■? i don’t and never will know it all.again why the personal attack cyber warrior?? i was merely pointing out that i think a lot of todays so called training seems pointless.and as for the hi viz point,if you read my earlier comment i merely meant it as a joke side issue.i never said when and where you should or should not wear one.i’m no fashion critic and you can wear what you want to work, and surely in the same vain i can wear what i want.i was merely pointing out that i’d been driving 14 years not as a statement of knowledge.also where did i say that i objected to training??i was merely pointing out that in MY opinion a lot of it seems degrading.[zb]
( personal attack removed from quote and post ) jd
We were required to do a manual handling course for a company I used to work for. What do they train you on?, boxes, FFS. What did we used to carry… carpets. Well we thought sod this for a game of soliders and we told the assessor to follow us to the yard, when we got there we opened up one of the boxes and between two of us took one roll of carpet off the back. We then leaned it against the back of the truck and invited the assessor to lift it, admittedly we had chosen a bit that weighed over 40kg. Well we all fell about laughing when he couldn’t lift it, then four of us showed him, individually, how we lifted them and carried it around the yard on our shoulder. Well the guy decided to sign us all off on the course and he went off, the yard forman then made the desicion that since the company was paying it was pub time.
So I wouldnt say that all training is not needed, its just that some of it is bloody ridiculous and so far off the mark for the job you are doing, that it either needs to be flexible or changed to the jobs requirements.
Blunder Man:
Training is degrading?, what part of la-la-land are you from?.
DEGRADING=Embarrassing or Humiliating
Universal Dictionary
I wont comment further and get into a battle of wits with someone who is obviously half armed.
i meant the pettiness of most of the pointless training per se,and the way co’s seem to treat their drivers like complete incompetent fools that i find degrading, not training full stop.obviously training is required but a lot of it just seems completely pointless to me.and it’s the real world i live in,not la la land
There is no point in a person being forced to participate in a training course that he has no interest in.
When a person is determined to pass something, They will pass.
All i can remember from my old R.E class is “blah, blah, blah…blah, blah, blah”. as i had no interest in the subject, but i had to attend.
Conor:
Driving without a numberplate on the trailer is illegal. You get a £30 FPN if the Police stop you. As a professional driver, you of course know this and wouldn’t take out an illegal vehicle would you?
Sounds like a school Mistress giving a naughty kid a telling off!!
Conor:
The reason RB send new employees out with a driver for 3 weeks is because they’ve had years of experience of so called competent drivers who can’t manage to do it.
Reed Boardall? Says it all, [zb] steersman!
Conor:
As for embarrasing the rest of us, I’m sick of illiterate moron truck drivers embarrassing me. Is it really so difficult to use proper punctuation or don’t you have a clue? Still, you’re in good company on this forum.
I’m sick of the “new breed” banging on about the brave new world of Health & Safety and picking people up for non trucking-related issues like apostrophes. Are you sure you’re not Lynn Truss?
Oh, and Conor, if you don’t like TN then I’m sure PedantNetUK will be happy to have you as a member.
try turning up at larne docks for the cairnryan ferry without a high viz you are refused entry till you put it on,once onboard take it off by all means, just the port authority covering themselves for any claims .
now ive just gone through this thread and its a disgrace, full of edits of trying to get round the swearwords and personal attacks. please re read rule 3 below.
Rule 3 No bad language, racism, or other downright 'orrible stuff. The quickest way to find out if a word is allowed or not is to include it in a posting, and if the auto censor gets it, it is not allowed.
Re-spelling or doctoring a word to get it past the censor does NOT suddenly make the word allowable.
Rule 3 also covers Personal Attacks. Attack the post but not the poster.
scaniaman:
aaah the voice of reason,it just seems to me that MODERN trucker is treated like a [zb],and i for 1 really wouldn’t want to work for such co’s that treat you this way
When you display all the educational standards of a Jeremy Kyle guest is it a surprise? You’re treated like a [zb] because you display all the signs. Someone who can’t even use basic grammar doesn’t deserve to be thought of as having any intelligence.
coming from the person who doesnt understand basic english i find this funny. i mean i asked you not to post till i was done and had it wrote about 4 or 5 times yet yous till ignored it
[zb]
( language and derogatory comment edited from the post and also the quote ) jd
i edited mine because i made a spelling mistake and i didn’t want conor jumping on my head because of it. it wasn’t to dodge the word sensor because the word sensor didn’t recognise my word as bad language
i see ‘‘window licking idiot’’ hasn’t been removed surly this is a derogatory comment
Okey-Didley-Dokely:
