I’d like to get out of this driving lark. Been offered a job which sounds ideal,
same salary etc, home every night, but…
i’ll loose the £4400 per year night-out tax-free cash, which gets spent along with
the salary.
Do I leave a dead-end job and try to live cheaper, for something that will be forever
interesting and varied…
I’m really worried that my living standards will have to be lowered, all for the much nicer day-to-day
work.
I know, in the end it’s my decision, based upon a load of factors I wouldn’t say here, just
thought if anyone else had recently done a similar ‘rash’ thing!
Its not all about how much you earn…you have to think about the other side of the equation…how much you spend.
I went part time 7 yrs ago on the agency and if I told people on here how little I earn per year I`d be a laughing stock.
But we manage perfectly well, my wife works part time as well and we spend a lot of time together with the kids.
I might say well mannered, well behaved kids who don`t spend time playing computer games.
I regularly turn down full time jobs.
Take it. Lifes not very rewarding when youre spending all night in a layby.
I wish I could get out of this game for a healthier lifestyle (mainly shorter hours), I’ve tried my best to train for & find other types of work but all has failed & I’m stuck in this dead end job, good luck whatever you decide…
Well I recently left a tramping job to do more local and home every night.
My wage says I’m down be £80 because I don’t have my night out money but I take a fresh lunch each day and spend nothing at work apart from a “Friday treat” when I have a buy a bacon roll or something…
I know it seems a lot to lose but it ain’t that much on the scale of it…
Another plus point is I feel so much better with having proper meals and a shower every night at home, I loved tramping but I’m living better now.
“Dead end job” is a bit disrespectful some of us enjoy it and do well in it I don’t but others might, it’s a dilemma though. I grew up with sod all but wanted it all Ive found some way of making money since I was 13 I’m obsessed with money and what it can buy me but I’m desperate for kids all my mates kids are almost ready for school my sister had hers 2 years ago at 21 now she has sod all and I have a nice place that I bought at 20 a decent car and have just bought another place to move into with my fiance. The one thing I want though still hasn’t happened I’ve spent all my time earning and wanting and now I think ■■■■ I’m 27 I need to get a shift on before I’m having kids well into my 30’s. material things have made me proud of myself and to an extent happy but would I be happier now without it all and a couple of kids calling me dad when I get in probably.

I agree there. When I retired my income dropped by 75%, so we adjusted our spending, and have a much better life for it.
I realise that the OP probably has greater living expenses than I had, but it is surprising what you can do without if you really want to.
Karl, agreed…I should have used different words…what I really meant was that
there’s no chance of promotion where I am now.

Cheekymonkey, your points are SO valid, thank you. Sometimes it needs someone else to say it!
I would try the new venture and if money got really tight maybe work a day on the agency once or twice a month, im currently in the process of retraining and i will possibly still be driving alongside my new career just to make ends meet
It too easy for people to fall into the trap of setting their personnel finances to the point of needing the extra cash that additonal income from bonuses and night out money. They take on debt based on that level of income (basic wage + bonuses). Whereas they should be living on the income from what the basic Salary gives. Bonuses & night out monies are, and should always be considered a top up on your wages & never guaranteed.
I’ve worked with guys who knew to the penny how many hours overtime they needed to do to balance the family budget each week
