Decisions decisions! Mixer or sweeper?

Hi all,
I recently passed my Class 2 and have been fortunate enough to have been offered two jobs directly with companies already.(pleased to avoid the agencies)
The choice comes between driving a roadsweeper or a cement mixer. They are both local to me so minimal travelling, sweeper work will be home every night and the mixer is a sleeper with (they say) the odd night out.

I am aware that the mixer job is likely to be much dirtier, especially with winter fast approaching.
Not a great deal in it wages wise and both will be contracted so no need to worry about lack of work on the sites over Xmas etc.

I kind of figure from a driving point of view, driving an 8 wheeler mixer into tight delivery areas would be more difficult and possibly more rewarding.
I have already booked my Class 1 for November and hopefully will move on at a later date, if I get the right opportunity.

Which of you guys have worked these and were/are the experiences good or bad?
Have any of you moved on from such a job and wished you hadn’t?

Thanks in advance.

I think they are classed as plant in which case = yes

Yes, I have been told they are exempt.

I don’t have experience in either… but I’m not going to let that stop me sticking my oar in! :grimacing:

Great work on avoiding the agencies, top class.

Personally, I’d choose the mixer job. Sounds like it’ll be more interesting and it’s got to be pretty cool to see the results of your load turn into a structure. I doubt working a sweeper would be all that much cleaner either.

Id say look at the company as much as the vehicle youll be driving. You seem lucky to have a choice as a new pass, so well done. Try and see if you can grab a chat with anyone actually working for these companies? You may end up talking to a whinger who enjoys a good moan, and get a skewed view, but if they say theres always loads of vacancies at any place then maybe you should wonder why? If theyre happy then that`s gotta be good.

Mixer hands down.

Stay away from sweepers this time of year, you will forever be getting out and unblocking suckers unless your only on road plainings, but if you’ve just passed your test take what you can get and call it experience

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong. But in my imagination crawling along in a road sweeper might get boring quite quickly.

itl definately be more boring than having to go in and out of the cab of your mixer all winter in the freezing pishing rain loading ,unloading, walking about in the mud,and constantly washing out the tub.

Winter in the sweeper and summer in the mixer it is then! [emoji13]

LMAO, you are my sort of bloke. :grimacing:

I really liked the TM at the sweeper place, straight talking sort of guy, so I am swaying that way. I am awaiting some further details from the mixer job, but will make a decision tomorrow.

Thanks for the answers guys, as said its all experience.

Let us know how you get on with whichever you choose.
