Does anyone know of decent maps that will last more than a couple of months?.
Have tried the spiral type, but the pages always fall out after awhile, the other type, with the staples go the same way, had 2 pages blow out the window today.
I use mine every day looking for one horse towns all over the show, so could do with one with good bindings maybe even laminated so the egg and coffee will wipe off.
Go the SatNav route, much better although more expensive if it blows out of window
I was thinking of SatNav but how would it handle routing me to small villages and farms, I deliver tyres with a 45ft trailer so have to be aware of low bridges weight limits and single track roads.
I bought a Collins map about a year ago(not the cheap one they’re selling at service areas)The 1" to 3.2 miles one around £8,does’nt give bridge heights or anything but in the back gives detailed mapping of main towns and surrounding areas with ind estates etc.
My map has got me out the ■■■■ on many occasions.
■■■■ sat nav ,PROPER truckers use maps
I use the Philips spiral bound county atlases, they do start to look tatty, but I’m very careful with mine…for content they are unbeatable…especially for farms.
The smaller glue bound versions of them aren’t as well done imo…even though the content is the same.
The only criticism I do have is that the pages don’t overlap at all.

SatNav would be a possible answer. I use a combined SatNav and mobile phone (T-Mobile SDA + CoPilot). If I come across weight or height restrictions, then I take an alternative route and the SatNav will always plot a different route to my destination.
I believe that ALK (company behind CoPilot) are working on a Truckers version for the UK which would include height and weight restrictions in the map database.
With the spiral bound ones, dont leave them folded open on them selves, either lay them flat wide open or close them up with a bookmark, makes them last lots longer.
Yeah the glued ones are ok, but the binding soon splits with a bit of use. OK for a private motorist.
Wouldnt bother with the AA street atlas’ as they tend to have loads of errors in them, like poor index’s and whole roads missing off the maps!

Paper maps don’t always cover these points, Tom Tom have some handy gizmo’s that aid with things like low bridges, can’t remember the site, but found a POI of low bridges that can be added to their mapping, POI = points of interest,
The good thing with Sat nav is that if you come to a low bridge etc it will automatically reroute you when you turn away from the original route, I’ve been using them for about 6 years now and can honestly say they have never caused me any major problems, paper maps have though.

What will you do with them?
In a few month are new Roads and you will need a new Map,or you drive international and don’t use it so much
tankie sorry to dissapoint you but alk arent working on a version for truckers the truck version is only available in the usa as over there alk use there own map data and over here and in europe they use a third party NavteQ .
I have some very high up contacts at alk and would know if they were planning anything like this
the new vrsion of copilot i think allows you to wieght you preferance for certain roads
I haven’t come across a paper map with weight limits on it - so I use SatNav (also a lot lighter than carrying all those maps about). Normally if you review the route and stick to “A” roads as close to your destination as possible I get little in the way of problems.
I keep a note of the route I plan to take since the route that TomTom starts with is not necesarily the way it will end up sending you, since going into services or going on “unknown roads” such as parts of the A1M or A5 around Hints will cause it to recalculate your route !!
Wheel Nut:
Ive noticed lately that Phillips are doing a lot more town plans, they are not a patch on A to Z.
I dont normally buy them though, just use the well thumbed ones in service stations
Im still going to remain a technophobe though and refuse to use Sat Nav
Granted AtoZ are spot on for towns and cities, (house numbers are useful!) Phillips beat them hands down in the sticks though land marks are much more clearly defined (masts, pubs, churches and all the farms are named!)
I guess it’s swings and roundabouts though, all these things have their uses. Post code navigation on satnav is excelent for those places truly in the middle of nowhere!

and you wont ever get it either as no one will take responsibility for collating and updating the data
Yes the Phillip’s / Ordnance Survey blue county maps I find are the best and coupled with the big AA Trucker’s Atlas for low bridges .
I’ve had the majority of my OS county maps for bloody years now and not one of them has fallen to bits (nor even started to) - and I’ve got every single one now except Cornwall.
My Trucker’s Atlas is a different story and is in about 14 different pieces now . Must get myself a new one one day.

i have good 10 Kg Maps from UK-ountry and Towns at Home i don’t need now and may buy new when i do again General Haulage,as nearly each hour openens anywhere in UK a new Road or Industry Estate
I once used a mates maps, which I thought where great,
What you’ll need
Basically he got a big A4 Binder a load of clear plastic wallets and his A-Z’s
What to do with it
Chop the pages carefully from your A-Z place them in page order in the plastic wallets, place the plastic wallets in the A4 ring binder.
What you get
Nice Big A-Z which you can get about 5/6 counties in one folder, you can wipe them down if you spill your tea ('cos you should never spill coffee!) on them
they don’t rip easy and you can take the pages out to add detail or have them on your knee!
Downside
It takes ages to sort out, but they last ages!!
