Day running light failure

the maoster:
Are you sure? I have no idea of the legalities btw, but I’m pretty certain that they have to by law be fitted to vehicles manufactured after a certain date

Not really, I’ve not seen it in black & white but if it was then all brand new vehicles would be fitted with them & no option to turn them off.

You may be right PD, but I’m sure the Actros I drive hasn’t got a menu setting to turn them off.

Having said that I’ve been driving it for a year and only discovered by accident on Monday how to tilt the drivers seat back and forwards, so what do I know?

I know the new MAN TGX has the option to turn them off in the settings menu. Never got the chance to drive the new Actros so I don’t know[emoji57]

I have checked with my mate who is very high up in the DVSA (he cleans the windows) and apparently with a day running light failure they would like to see drivers wearing a hi viz vest whilst out on the open road also a spare hi viz vest should be wrapped around the passenger seat.

As an aside.
Are they a legal requirement?
I know that if a light is fitted,it must be working . . .

Not true - the only ones which must work are those which are required to be fitted. For example, reverse lamps have to comply with the Road Vehicle Lighting Regs, but as they are not required to be fitted, no offence is committed if they don’t work.

DRLs are not yet required on all new vehicles - just on all new models. A brand new vehicle built under a pre-existing type approval (pre 2011 for cars and vans, pre 2012 for trucks and buses) will not be required to have DRLs so it won’t matter if they don’t work (some manufacturers may fit them to older models still in production purely for marketing purposes).

I switched them off

Yep, mine are off too, one good thing about the MAN’s, mind you they’re normal bulbs too not fairy lights so a breeze and pennies to change.

I was told they’re ridiculously expensive. Probahly because we get them from main dealer.

Hmm you got me wondering now, i’ll have a poke nose if i remember when i’m on one of me many breaks and see exactly what reference number is on the bulb, be interesting to see just how much the dealer is loading the cost.

£30, yes, thats right, thirty quid for a bulb! That’s main dealers for you!

My boss IS the main dealer,so no probs there
