Day 2 of job hunt

Hey,

I’ve been ‘floating’ around on the forum for a while just reading posts (all very helpful, thanks!), have since passed my Cat C (first time, 3 minors) in a 26t curtain sider, in an opticruise gear box (so I have my manual licence even though it’s like an automatic…which I hated, I like gearboxes in cars rather than automatic cars, feels more controlled!) and have now started on the job hunt!

I’m 23 and currently work in a special needs school but i’ve grown up around trucks all my life!

So, day 1, not much luck, went round 4 companies, some seemed interested but just said they don’t have any work at the moment.

Day 2, 3 companies were on the hit list, for 2 of them I got the same response as yesterday but then the 3rd I got a bit further with. I spoke to the “hiring bloke” and then the big boss of the company walked in so had a bit of a group conversation, spoke about my situation, age, being a girl, experience and all that. The company are mainly a pallet hauling business and are at the point where they are thinking/needing more drivers. They said in these times the insurance people have come down hard, not so much on age but more the new licence but if an “intelligent” person comes along with no experience they are willing to give it a try…I past the intelligent test (thankfully!) and the boss was saying if I came in on a Saturday morning, he’d let me drive around the airfield where they are based to see if he thinks I’m ok. From there, he said as I’m a complete novice he’d send me out with another driver for 2/3 weeks, learning the ropes and all that, BUT unpaid.

Here’s the thing, if at the end he’s not happy/thinks i’m not strong enough blah blah there may not be a job at the end. He said that he’s not too sure about making me quit my current job for it and then possibly end up jobless if it all goes pear shaped etc. But being in a school I get the 6 weeks holidays off (and my current contract means that I also get my normal pay for the whole summer…I didn’t tell them this!) so I said if they’d be happy to hang on, I could do the shadowing in the holidays which they seemed quite happy with and then its almost like i’m not doing it for free because i’m still being paid by the school. Then if no job comes about I haven’t really lost anything, I still have my job come september and i’d have had a bit of experience.

Nothings set yet though, I’m still going to go hunting tomorrow to see what other opportunities come about but i’ve got the blokes number and he’s got mine and said its in my hands now, all I need to do is call and we’ll do the test run.

Hope this gives some positivity to other young newbies, there are people out there willing to listen (even if nothing comes of it!). My bit of advise would be just drive round and see people face to face rather than phone calls/emails and research about the company online (rather than just find the address) because then they know you care and have actually aimed for them rather than just dropping in and you can talk about their fleet and their work. Seems to be working quite nicely for me

Dont worry to much about being female as there are quite a few of us around

Keep looking & try to keep in contact with this bloke as he wont remember to call you ( they never do   )

But as you have found out your age may be the problem but as you have a job atm if this job dont turn out ok at least as you say you still have a job & can sit with your licence until the market pick up a bit

Welcome and congrats on the pass  To me 2/3 weeks unpaid to find out if your reach their expectations is just a “bit” OTT :open_mouth: :open_mouth: Reckon you,ve got the right job hunting technique, and you,ll get there without having to work for free   Wish you all the best

Hiya and welcome , i agree I think 3 weeks is a bit ott for you to give your time for free , but you are young and the experience would be invaluable , it is up to you do you think he will use you after this 3 week period or is it just him letting you have a go , dont worry bout being a girl either your a driver now you passed the test and as for the strength side of thinks theres always a way round it by using your head to get something done , pallatised stuff is normally not too bad as all you have to do is pull curtains and a forkie takes it off , as for using tail lift and moving with a pallet truck I have found lowering my susp a bit gives me a little bit of hill to get a full pallet moving if cant move with veh susp up , but you have the right attitude about getting a job they are not gonna come to you you have to get out there and find it , just the other day I drove for free but was just the one night , wanted to get that first artic job under my belt but with the added security of a competent driver with me should it all go wrong, impressed the guy and they know I can handle the lorry , so he told me they will use me when needed but I showed him all that in one drive not three weeks , and it gave me confidence in myself that im able to do it , if its the guy teaching you and you are not working on your own for nothing ie he gets a job done for nothing and all your doing is shadowing the other driver you may gain a lot from doing this , but keep looking for other companies dont just think this is all I can get as the next place you visit may offer you a full job with pay

whatever you do good luck with it all

Jen x

Good for you and I agree that going to see people face to face is the best way,you can get to see the company’s offices too and just get a general feel for the place and whether its right for you or whether its a complete ■■■■ hole…people can easily fob you off on the phone or not bother replying to emails or application forms, which seems to be the norm nowadays so you’ve done the right thing.
I hope it goes well for you, nice to hear about people’s successes, instead of all the doom and gloom end of the world ■■■■ that seems to be the norm on here. :sunglasses:

Yeah exactly, and to be honest the one that said about taking me on would probably be my bottom choice out of all the ones I’ve visited! Maybe that says something about the company, who knows. I thought the same, 2/3 weeks is a bit steep but its a case of now deciding whether I go for it for experience purposes or just pass on it.

Looked at a couple more companies today but nothing major to report on!

I might hang on for a bit, I’m going to Truckfest in a month (it’s like my second home) so i’m going to keep an eye out of companies in my area, maybe talk to some of the drivers etc, then if need be go around all the companies again in the summer holidays when its not so close to the financial year, plus my dad and his mates have been telling loads of people so my name is getting around a bit and lots of people have their eyes out for me!

Why does the only female truck driver thats good looking and a very close age have to live on the other side of the country :frowning:

It might be a picture of her sister and cousin

Hey Stagedriver, ya could be in for some flack from that " the only female truck driver thats good looking "

Yup i know  that one company i went to had never hired a woman as a driver though and they’ve been going YEARS

Women make excellent drivers. They can do more than us men. Less hot headed lol

You’ve never met my ex wife have you?
