Where abouts in Grange Over Sands was their depot?

Grange Over Sands is my favourite place in ■■■■■■■ Dennis, you never fancied retiring there?

K.Fells Grange base prior to Davy & Co moving to Milnthorpe in 1957 was through the archway on the opposite side of the road from the Railway station. You may not have heard the local saying “george” but Grange-Over-Sands is called “Gods waiting room” and I’m not ready to snuff it yet ! Well not if I have any say in matter that is !! Cheers Dennis.

Thats a shot of one of J B’s old strut cranes Malc, they took a bit of effort to build them up and take them down whereas this is a shot taken in our depot in later years when they were running telescopic cranes, seen here unloading new TASK trailers from ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Dennis.

You forgot Unsworth of Cartmel “george”,they were long time subby’s to Robsons and later on Percy Unsworth ran for TDG until his retirement,a nicer chap you could never wish to meet!! However,Davy & Co (Grange) Ltd. the founder was a Captain A.B.Davy who moved to Grange from nr.Wakefield after WW2,he owned and lived on Holme Island, his wife was a member of the Sirdar Wool firm, anyway Capt Davy was quite an entrepanuer in his time, his main busines prior to going into road haulage was running the firm of Roberts Davy, coal factors, and they supplied all the coke to Askam,Barrow and Millom Iron Works obviously Askam closed first then Barrow and finally Millom in '68.Davy & Co bought out Kirkby Fell the Grange Milk haulier ( Libby’s) and they(Davy) also owned the lease on Whitbarrow Quarrie at Witherslack where they couldn’t blast but the stone literally ran out of the face.Their tippers carted it to Grange station where it was loaded on Rail for the Scottish steel works.Capt Davy and some of his pals apparently had fall out with Grange golf club in the early 50’s so he built a 9 hole course,Grange Fell, and formed a new club!! When I bought certain assets from Davy&Co in 1976 Grange Fell club was on the list !!! Although it was on a long lease to the Club and was of no interest to me,I only wanted the subsiduaries and the depot and by this time K. Fell & Co was the only operating subsiduary,J.L.Ion Ltd was dormant and J.B.Hudson had just stopped trading and was a shell with £30K in the Bank!! As Fell’s was the trading name of Davy & Co I bought the name and registered it as K. Fell & Co. Ltd. IIRC I held 1 share personally and the other 99 were held by Bewick Transport Services (Holdings)Ltd.Enough to get your teeth into for now “george” Cheers Dennis.

All I can tell you about K. Fell & Co. is the origional owners name was Kirkby Fell and he was a farm collection milk haulier running into Libby’s factory at Milnthorpe.Libby McNeill and Libby were an American,Chicago based, food manufacturer who opened the UK plant in 1933 and a number of local hauliers brought milk in from the surrounding, about 15 miles radius, area. So Fells were long established well before Davy moved into the area and bought them out in the late 40’s early 50’s(I’m not sure of the exact date)Libby’s,worldwide, were taken over by Nestle in 1970 but they were left to carry on operating as a “free standing” company in the UK until around '78.Libby also had a manufacturing site at Staverton for culinary products and their head office was in Kenton Middlesex.Ultimately the HO was moved to the Nestle UK HO at St. Georges House Croydon.Back to K.Fell/Davy, Davy & Co (Grange) Ltd.used K.Fell & Co as T/A style but after Capt A.B.Davy’s death in '63 when his son John H.took over he bought out firstly in '64 J.L.Ion of Milnthorpe and then in June '66 he bought J.B.Hudson from Athersmiths Bros. of Barrow who had tried ,and failed ,to relocate the J.B.Hudson “A” licence into Barrow, even though Hudsons were regular hauliers out of Barrow Steel Works.John Davy traded both Ions and Hudsons as seperate Ltd entities although the shares were owned by Davy & Co.Then almost 10 years after to the day almost in June '76, I via Bewick Transport Services (Holdings) Ltd. bought out what was left of Davy & Co. T/a K.Fell Ltd. OK “george”,Cheers Dennis.

Hiya “george”,the shot of the Wearing Bros. S type Bedford was taken by me,age 14 years in about 1961,so whoever put it on the internet has stolen it!! The property you have circled in black on the Map is definitely not Barkers little workshop in the middle of the village.I knew Billy Keith fairly well, his “nick name” was Kruger but his proper name was Errington Keith which he disliked so you called him Bill,he was a larger than life character,Jackie Brady,Kruger and me spent many a long hour in The Newby Bridge Hotel after RHA meetings,Jackie never reckoned Kruger as a haulier because of the rates he was prepared to operate for.But Jackie would have given his right arm to get him as a Fleet engineer.Keiths ran a fine fleet even prior to MOT testing coming in in '68,they were second to none where maintainence was concerned.I re-call in the early/mid 70’s Kruger had a new Granada car which he wrote off and rebuilt 3 times !! He was a big man in the “funny hand shake” brigade.Keiths did quite a bit of subcontracting for Bewick Transport in the late 70’s,woodpulp into Henry Cookes from Tilbury and Ellesmere port IIRC.Cheers Dennis.
