Well we opted for the easy option and ended up round baling the high fields at home, 56 bales of haylage ideal for feeding sheep through winter.
Went out last night and managed a couple of pints of Guinness and then a lay in this morning, then off to meet a chap from Nantwich who bought one of our old Haybob’s off E bay to give him a hand to load it onto his trailer.
Buzzer:
Birthday it is for me today so went to look at a replacement horse, got there at 7.45 am took one horse with me to pair up did six miles borrowed a carriage of the man for the New Forest Show next Thursday, lost 3/4 of an hour going round Chichester on the way home bloody nightmare.
As I say got the horse from “The Old Baily” cos he is on trial see if he fits in with the rest, good straight man to deal with Buzzer.
PS. If it works I got to pay up.
Well come on Buzzer give us the lowdown on this “knacker” your trying before buying How old is he, how many hh, he looks to be decent length along his back, so I hope he will do your job and blend into the team ! Cheers Bewick.
Dennis the horse is 7yo and stands at a smidgen over 17hh, he drove with the horse I took with me but think he will go better with another I have hear as a leader, if I don’t like him I can take him back and change him as the guy has 90 Gelderlanders not all chestnut mind. They had a bit of a charge about in the paddock at first but they are settled now, got to get him shod Tuesday then hopefully at the New Forest Show on Thursday in the multiples class in a body break the chap lent me, we will see how it goes Buzzer.

So I take it he is a Gelderlander John, when we lived further into Town 30 odd years ago we were fairly close to The ■■■■ & Dolphin Hotel which belonged to Vaux Brewery’s of Sunderland and it had two cracking stables behind and every year one of their horse drays came to Kendal for a week at the time of the County Show and the annual torchlight procession in early September. Well the Dray was always pulled by a pair of the Vaux Percherons, now they were bloody monsters but gentle giants. The Draymen and the Ostler used to stay in the hotel ( Now they Boys could Sup!) and the Wife and I used to call in and always had a good craic with these lads from Sunderland, and always after “lock in”( the Vaux Lads were Residents ) we’d go out back into the stables and I’d feed these two monsters two or three packets of Strong Mints apiece ! One year they sent down their only team of Gelderlanders as well but they pulled a lighter kind of dray than the big Grey Percherons ! Apparently, the Accountants at Vaux finally did away with the Brewery horses even though the Dray lads told me the Horses were more economical for deliveries around their many boozers in Sunderland. Cheers Dennis.
Aye it is a gelderlander Dennis, unloaded the carriage I borrowed so me Mrs could give it the once over with Mr Sheen, wonderful stuff just spray it on and its easy to wipe off and leaves a fine gloss.
Cleaned all me stables out today and fresh litter, I deep litter them and when it gets about a foot deep I clean it out with me little articulated loader into a tipping trailer and away.
Dennis I been wondering as your surname is Smith where did the name Bewick originate from ?
Wrighty hope you got your haylage secured as I see you are having a tad of the wet stuff, wish we were having that down here as we sorely need some rain, about three days solid will do for starters, cheers Buzzer.
Drove the team today with new horse in , went well. All shod last night all washed out tails platted clean coat’s on and leg guards ready for the New Forest show tomorrow, cleaned the harness after tea hate that job, all loaded up sept hosses ready to roll int morning Buzzer.

Cheers Dennis.

Aye Larry, that bottom shot looks like they were used to a bit of graft if the Old lads Apron looks owt like but the upper shot looks like he had moved up into full management if his Suit is owt to go by, but I believe he was running a good number of Foden Steamers by that time ! Have you sobered up from the Birthday celebrations yet ? Cheers Dennis.

Good luck today buzzer , hope all goes well and enjoy . Dennis
Just finished unloading and packing away after our day at the New Forest Show, a lot of hard work but lucky to have willing helpers. Any way at the end of the day we came second to a very professional show man who kindly lent me the carriage but when he told me today it was an 1890 original worth about 40 grand I was a little concerned to say the least. Got a couple of pics from FB but better to come later for sure, cheers Buzzer.

Here are some better pictures from today, Buzzer.
PS 4got to say came second in class too.
Well done Buzzer and crew all the hard work has certainly paid off, got to say having never had a lot to do with horses they look stunning. They look a real sight with their ears pricked up, I take it the new horse performed well and has fit in to the team with no problems…

Nice turnout Buzzer! I see you have put the new 'Hoss in the N/s trace, is this the normal way of things when you are using a new team member ? or is that the place he has been used to previously maybe ? Best of luck, Cheers Dennis.
Dennis put the new horse out front as near side leader but when I went to see him he went in the wheel but in the interest of matching length white legs is why he is where he is, the leaders match and the wheelers. Its not uncommon to change them about so they know different drive positions so in the event of maybe one day having to move them some where else they don’t play up, also if you can get them ridden in an open bridle this is also good, don’t ride me self too far to terra firma for my liking, back to normal today checking all cattle making sure every thing is ok and two hours picking flaming beans, another three big washing up bowls full also cleaned out the chooks so well knackered now best nip down the pub for a livener eh, cheers Buzzer.
