This sign in Veurne is in several languages too made me chuckle lol

Evening all,

Buzzer, I have the same problem now with distance driving. Wears me out going to Heysham for the Isle of Man Ferry, so I always catch the 0.200, then you have the day in front of you when you get off the boat. Mind you the Steam Packet men are coining it in, must be one of the dearest short sea crossings in Europe…even worse than the Red Funnel men were!

Nice Harrows, but like Wrighty I ve only ever used chain harrows, (mind you Im so clumsy, Im probably better with a shortened subsoiler! That looks a nice little lorry, well under the weight, and unlike a Transit, d`oesnt look like a “■■■■■” on his travels!

pdb, and Buzzer, your comments on markets took me right back. The family used to send me out with a well worn O serie Bedford around the Shropshire hills. Soon learned not to rely on Brakes! Nice load of Bullocks…really wakes you up in a morning, (especially a wet one).

There was one old boy, down in Montgomery, who had a Corgi, fantastic dog, used to load the young Beasts for you, (thank goodness)…My Uncle always impressed on me to present the Farmers Cattle well…clean straw, and always in fine fettle. I remember washing off the Udders from some Dexta`s in Salop Mart, and as I stood up, the old boy where I had loaded them was leaning on the hurdle…“Thanks Lad”, he said, and gave me two bob…by heck, I was well made up, I was walking on air!

Decades later, I used to get really mad at the uncouth Italian, and Danish “pricks”, doing the Pork down to Italy, no knowledge of stock, water themselves rather than the stock, “barstewards”, if the animal is for meat, make its life good, and when the end comes make it swift and clean…boy I hated those slimy individuals…big power lorries…, big egoes…weak willies…

All my farming has been arable, never able to do stock, (my cousin up in Kirby Lonsdale laughs at me, she is a good stockwoman, in hard country), but Im proud of the way I was tought to handle stock as a youngster, and what I did!

Buzzer is your ground a bit sandy? The way the field is greening it looks to be. Were on clay here at the farm, but further out into Shropshire we grow on sand. Beautiful loam, fantastic for salad crops, but right by the farmyard we are well waterlogged at present…then a week of sun, we are rock hard…but fantastic for Wheat and Barley.

Cheerio for now.

Well where to start Saviem (John) Talking of the IOM as you do a mate of mine has recently been over there and purchased the complete carriage collection of Gilbeys Gin and he told me they also have a finger in the pie on the Steam Packet shipping line. He told me even going through them an artic would cost around £400 to ship. This is reminiscent of the cost of going to the IOW last time I did that it cost £230 for a little 7 1/2 ton Leyland Daf.
As for the harrows I have had a set of the old type trouble is with advancing years I just don’t have the strength any more to chuck them about like I used to so gone hydraulic.
As for my little pickup she is a goodun, the second of that model I have owned but the present one is a tipper, very handy that. the first just a flatbed but gave me six years service and I sold it for just £300 less than I gave in the first place and you cant get better motoring than that. They are 3.5 ton gross so also have a good payload.
Remember those pig carts from Holland and they always stank, some had four decks and never envied the poor sods on the low level floor choking on exhaust fumes belched out going up the Blanc. We bought several old Scania pig carts from Peter Gilder, When I complained as they had no night heater he explained they never got cold, always double manned two trips a week form Holland the first to Naples the second to Rome so they had done a bit by the time we got hold of them.
On to our ground well we are on gravel so drains fairly well but the last couple of years its been really wet and even down here its a problem, but ime thinking of turning out soon not like Wrighty who says it will be June before they get to do that. Always liked to have some cattle about and I don’t think there is any money to be made nowadays with livestock.
On another note we are forecast a few dry days so my thoughts are turning to getting the early spuds in (a regular topic on theses threads) got my seed spuds already in store, as usual my favourite Annabelles and ime trying some Charlotts as well this year so watch this space. We let the chicken in the veg plot this year during the winter and I have to say not a weed in sight so rotovate and get at it.

Who did I pass on the M3 north bound yesterday afternoon —GEL ? About 3 ish .

Hi Punchy Dan,
It wasn’t Buzzer then !! :unamused:

John, I remember a few years ago now, getting to the Isle of Wight ferry to ship over, we used to do 2 trips a day from Whitbread’s in Portsmouth to Whitbreads Newport I.O.W. there was an Italian artic waiting to ship over with a Volvo and stepframe trailer with a large frame going to a shipyard in Cowes, the driver was at the booking in desk and did not speak English the booking clerk was trying to converse with him to no avail,I shook hands with the driver, and spoke to him in Italian, the clerk said can you explain to him how much he has to pay for the crossing ? No problem how much ? £650 he said !! I relayed this to the Italian, he never batted an eyelid put his hand in his pocket and counted out the cash. 1 hour crossing !
I’ve just shipped one of my Sprinters from Portsmouth to Jersey return and that was £1300 !!!

Regards
Richard

It’s was £1388 over 12 yrs ago for my sprinter and trailer ,that was on the freight boat .

Ricardo I never knew you spoke Italian thought it was just the lovely Angie, what was your chat up line when you first met, bet it wasn’t "just one " cornetto " any ways the old corkheads get a better deal than us on them wightlink ferries, when I bought 10 cows over there I got John Shirlaw to fetch them home, asking how much it would cost he told me £300 and I usually barter on a price but I felt I just could not and paid what he asked which was very fair. They keep on talking about a bridge or tunnel but I cant see that happening unless the French pay for it and then it would not be cheap to get there either, Buzzer.

Hi John

Ha Ha, our first date believe it or not was in 1975,she was working at Spartrucks the Mercedes dealer in Andover, I had brought a 2419 6x4 for round timber transport and it was in for service, she made me a cup of coffee as I was looking at the Commercial Motor and an article on the Commercial motor show in Kelvin Hall Glasgow, she said that looks interesting,I said do you fancy going she said yes, and she was hooked, had a great time, she took her class 1 test and I put her behind the wheel, like the bloke who invented the rear view mirror she’s never looked back !! :unamused:

Richard

Richard let me remind you at this stage behind every successful man is a good woman, I had to say that as the Boss is looking on. Still remember The lovely Angie struggling with sheeting an artic in ISR but somehow she always pulled the " damsel in distress card " and some chap always came to her rescue. Those days seem so far away now and I suppose they are, we all forget just what we went through before becoming multi million pound men, that’s what all our drivers used to think anyway.
Of course I retired from day to day running a while ago now but set it up for Hori and Steve so its all been plain sailing for them, they will tell you a different story no doubt but how things have changed in the transport world since we started both of us doing round timer, ironic that JD.

convoy of 3 on A30 out of the west today lead by the fly swat at Honiton then R1 didnt get 3rd reg either side of exeter.

Well what a lovely day we are having, if it keeps on like this I will have to put those new harrows to work amazing how it dries up with a bit of sun. Went to get egg cartons at Mole Valley but they did not have a pin for my harrows so went to my man who can, self taught welder can fix most things I break or make a new one like he did this morning. Never any mention of payment so always go to the butcher and buy a girt bit of beef and that’s my way of paying, or beans and spuds out the garden and what a lovely way to do business.

shy as ever buzzer , hiding behind the horse’s head but at least we get to see the lovely ladies . dave

Balders sent you a PM as I need your postcode mate, JD.

Buzzer ,what a good picture the middle horse is out of step,or is it left handed[footed] look like 3 brothers,or sisters, if the middle horse i was on the outside position would it upset the balance of the team and want to go its own way?
