Joe…
Gave up smoking years ago, Buzzer.
Bloody tapatalk!.
I’ll try again.
I found these while clearing my garage in readiness for moving house next Monday.
First is the business card John gave me when I struck lucky by calling on the off chance looking for work. I started a week later.
Next is Joe Carty, P22 and me, P222 parked up in North port, split having tipped at the cold store in Bugojno, Bosnia. Looking at the state of my truck it would have been winter time and IIRC the trailer was the first brand new Gray&Adams DIT01 on it first trip to Bosnia.
The last pic is of V44 somewhere on the motorway back from Kodak in Athens to Patras. I remember the trip well because on my previous trip I had loaded fruit in Badahoz for Sicily and wanted to take it but changed over in Madrid with a load for home. I had a moan up at the time and Horry softened me up by telling me he had a nice little trip lined up for me when I got back. To be fair I had the bank holiday weekend at home and an afternoon load on the Tuesday before heading out. I can only assume that Roger must have been on holiday that week!.
Cheers
Neil
Neil do I detect a little note of sarcasm about our longest serving driver who has been pretty much picking where he goes and what jobs he wants since he arrived at DIT, in actual fact he has just been to the top of Finland with a load and although he is not known for picture taking Horry ordered him to do so. We have not been that far north before so it would be good to record this event, watch this space.
Are you moving far Neil or just local ? best of luck with that as you probably have loads of clutter you forgot you had collected over the years that might come in handy one day, cheers Buzzer.
Only moving locally John, just need a bigger house. I’ve been pretty ruthless in clearing the clutter this time and even threw out my 90s strada italia maps. They were still stuffed full of packhouse directions all scribbled on Davies note pads. When I skipped them at the local recycling centre all the notes fell out and for a few seconds it was raining Davies paper squares.
As for your longest serving driver I always got on well with Roger although we did get off to a sticky start.
Not long after starting with you I cross loaded soap powder to tip Arunjuez near Madrid and having arrived the night before I parked up at the infamous KM47 where Roy Smith and Kevin Garner were already parked. We had a meal and a couple of beers and long story short I got it in my head that Roy was in fact Roger. I did speak to the real Roger a number of times over the CB but it wasn’t until a good 6 months later I met the man in person, in the yard as it happens.Having never met me he introduced himself as Roger and I wrongly assumed he was either a new start or somebody doing an odd trip. After all the Roger I knew was a giant of a man with a beard. From memory we were shipping out empty to load the first peaches of the season from southern Italy and although we chatted over the CB on the run to Dover it wasn’t until we sat down to a meal on the boat that I actually asked if he was a new starter or just doing a few trips. His face was a picture and I swear he spat his food out as he explained to me his status within the company. Luckily things improved throughout the trip but I don’t think he ever truely forgave me.
I haven’t seen him for a good few years so pass my regards onto him when you get chance.
Cheers
Neilf
Neil: as you know the way Rodger drives and the way he try’s to wined up the other drivers let alone new starters why wou you think anything else about an old man that looks like he came from a tailor shop window. Mind you he would have conned the salesman out off what he was wearing.
I know that it was a long time ago that I and most posters on here
drove for Davies, but I have to say that I never had any issues with Roger.
In fact just the opposite…he was a laugh to run with I thought.
Just my two pennith…errr that don’t look right but you know what I mean.
