Buzzer:
What became of SCAC ? don’t see them around any more Buzzer.

Evening Buzzer, due to the inclement weather, and the scarcity of equine blow up water wings, my old lad, (17hands Irish Draught/Thoroughbred cross), has had to be fitted with a complete set of Mr Dunlops, (Chinese moulded), Green …steel capped…willies…misprint…wellies …and he does not like them at all!!

SCAC, Dieppe was full of their trailers…even the lay byes,…

Yet by `96, the operation folded…administration…

Then a management buy out…was it Alain Tremarin… very bright French lad…I know the name…seem to remember a young Englishman in Dieppe…Andrew Elson?

SCAC had about 500 trailers, …and some “rumpy” boats…the Senlac…and the roly-poly Marine Evangiline…and was there not a real “evil” vessel…the Cassablanca?

Memories…Im better on the hauliers…

away to the Bollinger…(Ive found another 83…

Cheerio for now.

Hi Saviem. Andrew Elson if one and the same is now at Fraser Freight Portsmouth.

they have got climate control most trucks have ,the pod acts as air con when the engine off, only volvo has it as standard its called i cool ,if not u sweat u nads off when its red hot :frowning:

I remember when we just had fans JD…oh and sleeping across the engine cover, home made curtains in the windows. Oh, and no proper retarder ( unless you had a Berliet )… No Clim Pod■■? What would Tony the tart think of that■■?
I well recall him sweating his nuts off In the old 88 you restored. These boys now don’t know they’re born… CD playersf , microwaves…? We had tapes and a gaz bleu. Not to be confused with Gaz IOW…
" You were lucky ". … To quote Monty Python.

Take Mappo for example… When he started driving his back mudguards were thatched and the log book was in Latin…

Baldrick, Bon soir. As time evolved, Mappo swapped the thatched mudguards for a coal powered FH in the 90’s. No shortage when on for Denny. Still makes us laugh now the signs we had made up For the truck ‘Fred Scuttle’ see driver for details. 1st stop Paris to put water on, then gel on again. Would often see him at Corbeil oiling his wheels.

Laughs , stories and beer. John would have liked that. RIP john…

Mappo, you worked with him at RS Hills?

Was thinking today about Hayes in fareham…you do.a stint there? I remember Your Bro had FOW 1X…oh and Colin Tiller…he was on for Mick?

Hi Balders, no I never worked at Hills…although I did buy a caravan from them in 1972. My first marital abode.
I first met John in 1976 when I first start euro work…initially in a Big J then a non sleeper ERF.

I did indeed drive for Hayes of Fareham, firstly for Mick in his ex Middle East Marathon which I,ve previously posted
photos of on the Soton thread. We had a falling out then I drove for his brother. ( we did make up afterwards )
Now Colin Tiller…there,s a name I,ve not heard for years. We used to go to school together.
I don’t remember him driving for Mick, though he may have done at some time.

As for your comment regarding thatched wings and Latin log books, very funny…   :unamused: :unamused:[/quote

I didn’t know Colin very well. Last I heard of him, he was living in Spain, but that was probably 20 years ago now. The trip I recall with him, he was driving the ex M/E marathon you mentioned. I had an F12 doing a stint for Partrans in Soton . Keith Joneses ( Snoopy ) motor . Don’t know if you knew him? Anyway, the job was a tie up between Partrans and Mick Hayes . I remember it particularly as I got a pull at Pompey shipping out and I just happened to have one of Hayes French permits with a photocopy backing sheet. Slightly iffy. The Ministry got onto Mick and he was always very cool with me after that. however, a few years later I walked into The Wheatsheaf at Shedfield and there he was. Very ill by then and quite sad to see as I always remembered him as a big bear of a bloke…

hi Horry… Ha! Fred Scuttle… Brought a smile to my face that! Hope all good with you and yours. Cheers… balders.
speaking of Denny . Am sure you remember when Denny and I double manned to Italy in my Truck. Only had it a fortnight and Denny stuffed it into the barriers in Italy on the way to Cesena in the wee small hours o’the morning…
" avoiding something in the road "…

Does this bring back memories MV Dragon in Townsend Thoresens colours shipping out of Southampton, Buzzer.

Dragon08ccTT.jpg

Ah the Dragon with the English crew, and sister ship the Leopard with its French crew.
Used to always try and catch the Dragon as a preference…many happy crossings on her.

Oi Horry…Don’t you bloody start as well !!!
I must admit though, the Fred Scuttle signs were hilarious.
I remember Buzzer sneaking them on while my back was turned getting diesel.
Happy days.

Tone here is a picture of the Leopard next to the Viking 1V in Southampton, was the V4 freight only ? cheers Buzzer.

Hi John.Yes the Viking 1V was a freight only boat. Only took twelve drivers. If you were lucky you had a cabin to yourself.Sailed at 2100 as against 2300 on the passenger boat good meal and a great nights sleep.biggest problem was she rolled a bit Regards Charlie

Mappo would not have liked the V4 as I don’t expect it had a one armed bandit on board, JD.

As it happens John, they didn,t…However as Charlie said a longer crossing
so more time to kip and no screaming kids running about either.

Hi Tone,

You have this effect on children,it’s the shorts & sandals

It reminds me that one Sunday Angie & I put our trucks on there,as it had a full complement of drivers we went on the Valiant to Le Havre, which arrived in Le Havre before the freighter no problem, until the French fishermen decided to block the port after the Valiant had docked,we stood on the dock looking at the freighter which couldn’t berth, the next time we saw our trucks was the early hours of Thursday morning in Zeebrugge !! Needless to say the state of the drivers on the freighter including the likes of Jim Soffley who had been on there since Sunday night was not a pretty sight :unamused:
Fair play to Thoresens they put us up in Hotels and brought our meals, good old Patrick, and Serge in the freight office.

Hurry up and retire Tone I’ve got loads for Belfast,Geneva,Hamburg, and Trieste waiting for you just driving a Sprinter !! or if you don’t want to go that far Fareham,Ringwood, and Winchester :unamused:

Regards
Richard

Hi Richard.Anything for Alton Liss and Upper Wield ? Regards Charlie

Chalie about the only thing that gets delivered to those destinations is water cress seeds, cheers Buzzer.

Great story that Richard, ah the good old days aye, and bless the French fishermen.
Regarding your kind offer, I was thinking of something maybe a bit more local.
Totton,Bitterne or maybe at a push Hedge End. What do ya think ■■
On second thoughts perhaps me and Charlie could double man and do the Trieste.
I reckon we,d have that done in about six weeks or so.
Expenses paid of course and only a daily rate of £150.00…EACH :unamused: :unamused:

Charlie thanks for the offer but my insurance doesn’t cover war zones :unamused:

Tone that would be ok because the chap who’s doing it at the moment gets £340 a day so I would be saving some money, but knowing you two the food and drink expenses would be excessive :open_mouth:

Regards
Richard

Providing there’s still somewhere to get an espresso and Calvados !! :unamused:

" would roll on wet grass " that’s what we used to say, eh Charlie? AND , you had to back on. Alright for you posh boys with power steering! I used to dread it, not much fun in a mandator with about 8 ton on the pin, in the dark and after a couple of pints in the Marsh!

As I was writing I suddenly remembered something. I turned up one night, with a Tautliner in tow…I was late arriving and it was busy, lots of trucks already parked and I decided the best thing was pull under the canopy opposite and reverse back in a straight line… Only problem was, Canopy lower than Tautliner… I didn’t ship that night. All part of the learning curve… :unamused:

Richard QC… : My Dear Boy… I am a lot nearer Trieste than Mappo and Charlie, have great experience with Sprinters as per Frazer Freight. IE : Awake and driving 25 hours out of 24. ( if Ross Frazer is on here I might need your legal advice… ) Also you could out base the motor here. I have a space ready made in the poly tunnel… After the failure of JD’s Baldrick Beans last year… Cheers, Balders.
