All of Davie Malcoms trailers have a unusual axel layout, this is somthing to do with when carrying hanging meat to stop the truck swaying.
yes spot on the spread axle layout helps keep the whole combination stable when carrying hanging meat, the units are usally tag axle dual wheels to again help with stability and the extra length on the unit is for large fuel tanks to be fitted that dont protrude above the wings, i would suspect that all davie malcolms motors that run abroad would be spec’d this way.
It looks like Davie has got some inspiration from Scandinavia with the wheels layout.Spot on with 6 wheel tractors and spread axles like that - if only the rest of the UK would spec motors like that.Like to see Davie with a wagon and dragg now that would be interesting
fly sheet:
I’ve met him once when I bought a lorry from him, he’s a decent bloke & his kit is kept tip top.
Fly sheet
i was chatting to him at truckfest last year and he is indeed a really nice fella. he says the axle set up is for stability and also reduces tyre wear.
According to his website he has positions for school leavers or retired people for drivers mates going to Europe/Asia if any of you younger, school leaving guys are interested, beats doing a paper round hey! Even offer the right person a Yound Driver Training Scheme.

You’ll notice that this trailer is one of those Ekiri (whatever) sliding siders, these are Finnish made, I’m pretty sure he got one of these & started having his other trailers with the same axle layout, having found it saves tyre wear & improves stability. There was a piece in one of the mags about him a few years back. I wonder what the Premiums are about, I doubt there was a queue of drivers wanting to swap their big Volvos & Scanias for them
Fly Sheet, that’s a serious bit of kit you’ve got yourself there, bit of a departure from the Transcons
she looks the biz john, are you pleased with the job? i hope the penny pinchers at keller helped with the cost! (i had a very bad experience with them at canary wharf) robbin gits! by the way john that 460 12 litre of mine only averages 6.5 with the low loader going down to albania with a 20 ton digger and thats with me driving it if the boys drive it it gets worse.
Yeah I’m pleased with it Paul, Its managed 6.79 this week which is acceptable really given the work it does. I take it you’ve been on muckaway for them then? I dunno what the foundation side are like to work for I’m on the other side of the company chap & don’t know the crack with tippers & all that.
good work with them john just really slow with the dosh coz its all done on the measure, would have stuck with them just cant wait that long, looking likely ill going to albania this week with a 25 ton dump truck and reloading in albania with bitumen to go back to northern france, just put a new turbo on the old girl im hoping that might improve on the gas a bit, ive gotta put another tank on her at 68p a litre and no belly tank its a crying shame with only 625lts on the unit!
