saw a unit (can’t remember what it was exactly) on the A1 a couple of weeks ago bearing the eagle freight terminal name, pulling a tautliner?
Funny you should say that because after posting that, I saw an Eaglefreight rigid on the M1. Pretty ancient, N-reg ISTR
they had brought a few new motors, but i will find out if they are still going, a friend of mine pete smith (ozzy pete) worked for them for a while, grumpiest man on earth if anyone knows him?
My dad used to drive for a firm called William Elvy in Sittingbourne. In the 70s they were bought out by a Bill Puxley. Could this be the same Bill Puxley after he sold out to Croomes. Elvys used to run a fleet of rather ordinary ERFs AECs and Fords, but when Puxley took over they suddenly had really nice new Volvos, they also had a really nice Green & White livery. Although Puxley owned them they retained the William Elvy name and ceased trading in the mid 80s i believe. I,d love to get a photo of an Elvy / Puxley lorry if anyone has one, on the other hand it could be a totaly different bloke.
Hi Mark,
Yes this was the same Bill Puxley and as soon as he came over to William Elvy they acquired brand new Volvo F10s and F7’s in a revamped and modern ( for that time ) green and white livery.
I believe Puxley fell out with Croome and went his own way, hence acquiring William Elvy.

Bryan
I remember a wonderful ferry trip just days after the Estonia had sunk. We were on the Anna Karanina from Kiel to Saint vPetersburg with two Crommes drivers one of which I think was Cyril. All I remember was that my fellow driver “Shanksy” was sick all over the glass divide protecting the oldies looking out of the weindows from the bar and being legless before we even left port. One of the Croome drivers had pulled before we got out of the dock! I remeber shagging a russian student who got on at Stockholm and the fact that she was wearing black leather knickers! I remember the boat breaking through the ice to get into Saint Petersburg and the old ■■■■■■■ the dock gate wanting $25 to let us out!

I would like to say croome drivers never behaved like that on the anna. However that would be a lie , that is exactly how i remember it . What a boat , what a way to earn a living. good days .

HI,
Not long been on this web, but after 38 years on the Eurpean/ North Arica scene, i have been surfing the pages that you boys have put into place, and really must add my “bit” to the Croome comments.
I joined Croome when charlie was on Security, and only lasted 15 months. I was on the Tampax run Havant to Rome. After 8 months Croome asked me if my children were grown up??, i replied yes, the he said would i be prepared to be away over xmas and the new year. Yes ireplied. I went to Milan with my drag to load toys from a bankrupt company to London…back and forward M/T until mid January. In early January i was clearing in Novara on the way home, when Croome contacted me via the agent telling me to hand my drag to another driver so he could get home quickily for a party…i was to clearand tip his lorry. Irefused as i had been away for 5 weeks and missed xmas and new year.
HE SACKED ME…LEAVE YOUR LORRY THERE AND GO.IF I MOVED THE LORRY HE WOULD INFORM THE POLICE IT WAS STOLEN.
I emptied the cab, and a driver from Walkers of Tuxford took me back to Sheerness/Yard to collect my car.
CROOME IS A TOTAL ■■■■■■■ WITH ONLY THOUGHTS FOR HIMSELF.

If the scroate had done that to me I would have drove it empty back to the UK. If you told the police what happened they have let you carry on. That s/s was just a bluffer. Has he been topped yet? I did it with a few geezers .Hide the truck ,go round the office, get yer dosh then tell 'em the location .Always worked.
jeez harry - for somebody who never worked for the man, you’ve some strong opinions i did, and I couldn’t say I’d treat people the way he did occasionally, but there was/is hundreds of worse gaffers around
All I know is that he fired a fewgood honest hard working mates of mine for trivial mistakes. And to fire a man in the middle of the road is sheer power-mad arrogance. The man [ Krum ] was a serial megalomaniac.
It would be interesting to find out how many drivers he sacked & for what reason.
Also how many foreign drivers had serious accidents & done a runner.
He obviously reads these threads ,its wonder he hasn’t threatened to fire me !
Its a pity I didn’t have a session with him ; I would have reduced him to tears & made good money doing it.
i have just found this website and it is great to see the name William Elvy Transport being mentioned after all these years, William Elvy was started by my Great Grandfather Benjamin Elvy and passed on to his son William who had great passion for transport and he was supported by Peggy Thorne who joined the family business at about 15 and never left, eventually owing the Business, and at one point with Bill Puxley as her partner.
i Have some pictures of Elvy Lorries but would love to hear any stories any one has or any pictures that any one would like to share
Pulled onto Toddington Services a week or so ago and spotted this “old girl”. Poor thing…wouldn’t start!
Check out the ex AA service van! Complete with Latvian fitter!
Yes, noted recently quite a few ‘oldies’ still running in the Croome fleet - presume a lot of the new FH tackle has gone due to the administration of the Queenborough based David Croome fleet, that said the overspill yard in Queenborough is still rammed full of demount bodies not having moved since early this year… Did not realise Croome still had such older machines, maybe they were the offcasts sent out to the Lithuanian Croome operation which I believe is still trading.
William Elvy, yes remember them well and have put some posts on in the past.
Remember Elvys had smart vehicles. Remember Bill and Vick Puxley when they had the yard at Millwall and Then Rainham after that. Had some lovley Mandators got a pic of a f86 been trying to post has any body got a picture of the Mack they had.

My dad used to work for Elvys in Sittingbourne, their fleet was pretty average until Puxleys came along, then almost overnight they started getting new Volvos. I just wish i had taken some photos as there livery was really nice. It was very similar to Croomes in fact but Green instead of Red. Theres an old peoples home now where Elvys yard was called Elvy Court in memory of William ( Bill ) Elvy.
