Whilst the various debates are going on about the gritters etc. What about the state of the roads when the frost comes out of the ground after this current cold spell. We haven’t got half the damage repaired from the bad weather at the beginning of the year,so goodness knows what a mess its going to be after this lot.
Any thoughts or suggestions

Report them?
On motorways, they have to be repaired for safety reasons. They may be quickly filled with a bit of quick-drying tarmac initially, but they’ll be properly fixed eventually.
Local authorities vary in their efforts. My local county council made it known (after last winter’s mess) that any potholes reported to them would be repaired within 14 days. They had teams out 7 days a week and kept their promise, all credit to them. Can’t comment on other councils…

Hampshire County Council dont tend to repair roads
I’ve not been able to drive on any roads within a 30 mile radius of Bridlington in a lorry since 2000. They’ve only just started to fix the A614 a decade too late. Trouble is they’re not doing the worst section. There was a rough section on the approach to the roundabout at Carnaby which was broken top surface in tyre tracks for about 100 yards. That has in the last couple of weeks become two 2" ruts. I used to drive rally cars in the 80’s and the sensation is about the same from Thornholme to Carnaby. Soon they’ll be so bad I’ll not be able to drive to Bridlington from Driffield in my car.
The roads in this country have contributed to me becoming disabled but of course proving it is a different matter. I do remember a story on the local news 5 years ago where they drove down one of the main roads (either A1079 or A614) with some vibration measuring equipment on the passenger seat of the car and some H&S expert said that if you worked in a factory and were submitted to that level of vibration, your employer would be prosecuted.
Never mind a roads and the like, the motorways have bloody great big craters in them M73 really bad , M90 really bad , M8 bad around newhouse. Im trying to miss them - people must think im steaming going all over the lane
My housing estate is seriously bad especially round the speed bumps - you hit one them and guarantee you’ll crack a spring!
Still got january to go yet, the roads will be like a battlefield with craters everywhere!
Its a bit Ironic that the road surface has got so bad through the road works on the essex stretch of the m25
Here in Bulgaria some of the roads are like off Road Motor Cross courses Lol
When they fix the road here, they simply dig the pot hole up and put it somewhere else Lol so think yourself lucky they aint doing that yet in the UK Lol
Oh and we’ve just found out that the £37 a year road tax isn’t going up in January so it looks like it can only get worse here

I,m with davey, after having driven in other so called developed countries in Europe our roads are an absolute dream, time to stop complaining and appreciate what we have.
On the M25 last week & great big craters appearing in it, with a few degrees of warmth predicted some road surfaces are bound to lift up & some explode as it thaws. Never mind all our road tax will cover it surely
I was thinking about The Bucharest ring road the other day great slabs of mismatched concrete, as high as kerbstones in places, Bulgy had better roads than Rumo IMHO, those cobbles make for a great drive in the ice Here in the UK we’re aloud to whinge more though if ya strasse tax is £37 we have every right to
Fly sheet
I came through Romania in March and in June and totally agree their roads are worse than Bulgaria’s Lol
From Arad to Bucherest took almost 14 hours compared to the 13 hours from Amsterdam to Arad, Tucks were litterally crawling along roads with what appeared to be bottomless potholes. In March there were countless numbers of cars and trucks with burst tyres and damaged wheel rims aliong with one truck whose rear trailer wheel was coming adrift with the half shaft.
I decided after that journey I wouldn’t complain about the British roads again, It’s a different system over here, you need the Vignette to drive on the main municiple roads but no vignette for the villages as the Mayor gets a portion of the vignette money based on the number of cars registered to that village and its up to him how that money is spent (And in some villages it just goes on the Mayor himself PMSL) We are lucky that our Mayor knows the ins and outs of the EU grants system, having just had £750,000 spent on a new section of road in our village after it collapsed into a stream last winter.
It make you wonder though, just how many british councillors are aware of what they can apply for from the European Parliament, and never bother?

That may well be a weight problem. I’ve suffered no such ill effects !!!
I think we will only see thee full extent of the damage once the frost comes out of the ground, then the roads will start crumbling. As for Bulgaria and Romania, how much tax is paid on fuel and road fund licenses etc.

For an Articulated Truck its 1000 Leva thats about £475 per year Road tax if Euro 2 or above if its Euro 1 or less its 1300 Leva per year, for a standard car its 67 Lev thats about £37 per year.
Diesel is around 2.25 Leva at the moment and Petrol around 2.16 Leva at our local station, to simplify calculations I normally just treat it as 2 Lev to the British pound but obviously its less than £1.00
The fine for a car driver is 100 Leva for not having a vignette and I belive its around 300 for a truck driver not having one, obviously the vignettes can be bought for 1 week etc but works out much more expensive, I bought my car in November and had to pay 25 leva for 1 month then a further 25 leva for December as they expire on 31st Dec then a new 2011 vignette is required, had it not been for the village post office stopping me from buying a 12 month one I would of had to pay out the full 67 Leva again on Jan 1st
I think Romania is roughly the same for diesel, and the vingette was 6 Euros for 1 week for a sprinter van back in June and they craftily check you have one before you can leave the country which stops you nipping through during the night Lol Luckily I’d bought one in Hungary Just to be on the safe side.
