How much daily rest does a night trunker need.Is it the same as a day driver, 11 hours, which can be reduced to 9 hours.Or can’t a night trunker reduce, as a lot of the night trunkers say at my place of work.
Same rules apply, are night drivers in or out of the 10 hr working night rule ?

You definitely need to find this out mate. 50% of the workforce must have agreed to opt out of the 10 hour rule so that you can drive like a day driver

Daily rest requirements for night workers are exactly the same as day drivers.
The difference is that if you’re working at any point between 00:00 to 04:00 (goods vehicle drivers) the working time regulations limit you to 10 hours working time in a 24 hour period unless there’s an opt-out agreement in place.
Some drivers are saying that you can only reduce to a 9, if you are sleeping in the lorry when youre working nights.
They say it must be 11 off, if you have to commute home and then back to the yard for your next shift. Is this another drivers myth?

Yes.
At the DRIVERS discretion you can indeed REDUCE to nine off at base!
hopefully you’re drivers are unionised and sticking to 11 hours off!
stick to eleven off and if the whipper snapper who drives the desk gives any lip,
tell them it’s an hour home and an hour back commuting, see you in thirteen hours!
ALL DRIVERS IN THE UK, PLEASE WAKE UP AND TURN THE TABLES AROUND AS THE PENNY WILL DROP SHORTLY ONCE YOU CAN’T SPEAK RUMU OR BULGAR/ RUSSIAN!
you’ve been warned,
the race to the bottom is nearly complete!

A sensible myth, so just do as they do!
Ive been on nights for years, its 9 hours off.
When I was a night trunker many moons ago in the UK, my reast consisted of, Go home, get a few hours kip, get up about lunch time, go down the pub, go home abd watch TV or in my single days go back to bed with the barmaid or one of the other females from the pub, go back to work
Then I went and got married again which messed that schedule up

Might be a site policy or summat the union agreed with management.

^^^This…it should be at driver’s discretion in an ideal world - especially on night shift but someone will always reduce to 9hrs!!! This really does need looking at. I don’t think 9hrs off duty is enough but some drivers are there own worst enemy…I used to work with a guy who would start at 3 a.m. so he could ‘get done early’…most days done for 2pm but still in yard at 4pm+ talking diesel fumes!!! Infuriating!! Get a life!!!

but not so many years ago you could only have ten hours AT BASE!
the same amount of time you could have eight hours off LEGALLY!
these politicians ARE MAKING IT UP AS THEY GO ALONG!
look at the food last winter, extending drivers hours to SUIT!
the race to the bottom is nearly COMPLETE.

Hmmm, the race is nearly done, what with Bulgaria & Romania gagging to ‘get-in-and-grab-some’ at the Lib/Lab/Con’s invitation on 1 Jan 2014 - and likely be complete when the Turks eventually wedge their slippers in the door

9 hours is plenty
No it’s not if you have a family
Dafman:
No it’s not if you have a family
Ive done the last 8 years on nights, I have a wife, 3 kids and a cat.
9 hours is plenty, if its not then I suggest you either get rid of the job or get rid of the family?

Interestingly, you write ‘…wife…’ but don’t mention life
Nine hours may be alright for dossing in a pee-stinking lay-by to meet basic human requirement for a kip.
So is it 'live to work’ for everyone - and to hell with ‘work to live’ for those with need
Many of us suffering from Tony Blair’s compulsion to lump it with this 21st century ‘diversity’ rat-race experience 9 hrs reduced rest - as in reduced quality rest as only serving the accountant’s and undertaker’s professional advantage and not the health of the bloke lugging their luxury goods by lorry to market
Perhaps note that accountants and undertakers broadly enjoy 9 till 5 occupations - so why not respect the right for many of us to sod them

Having a life wasnt being questioned, but yes, I also have a life… A very good one actually
