I don’t know, there are plenty of ‘experienced’ drivers I know who don’t know how to do checks properly. I’m assuming that’s their excuse for not doing them anyway…

Funny is that, it doesn’t say anything about a quick 3 to 4 minute walk around seeing everything is ok, and using the next 12 mins that you book having a coffee and checking Trucknet out.
Had a chuckle to myself the other week, this young girl in a truck asked me if I would move for her after she had done her ‘‘15 minute daily checks’’ I said ‘‘yeh crack on pet I’ll be moving shortly’’ (I had just tipped in her firm’s yard, a rigid tanker outfit.
I watched her don full hi viz from head to toe, hard hat with chinstrap and walk around with a clip board and pen, diligently ticking every thing off for a precise 15minutes.
Ok the kid did nothing wrong, and good on her, but she had obviously just passed her test, and was as keen as mustard, …

i didnt think there could ever be a sadder unrealistic post than the gov one till i read what your describing.
no harm to her,but just so sad as an example of what the industry churns out nowadays.
ps,
there are of course exceptions to the above rule.( unfortunately not in the uk)

flippin eck what is it all coming to? That is madness. Even the guy who does our tacho analysis (ex vosa when as he says ‘they were honest’ and ex collision investigator/traffic cop) has said 10 mins is ok, anything less and it’ll get flagged. Drivers are simply turning into robots now. A bit like these morons who aren’t allowed to change a headlight bulb so have to wait for a fitter to come out. The days of blanking off air lines to get back and wrapping a rag around a wiper arm when the blades come off etc are disappearing all because people have no ability to fix up stuff, even if just to get to overnight park spot.

No names…but somebody on here the other day, gave somebody else on here a ■■■■ dog’s life (can’t for the life of me think who they were, but one was deadly serious, the other highly amused
) for saying that going over a minute on your time, or going over 5 mins or so for a good valid reason after unfoseens, was not worth bothering your arse about.
As you say ‘‘They’’ are getting ‘‘Their’’ way by churning out brainwashed robots.

H&S would have him for not wearing gloves!
We have drivers that cannot change a trailer bulb and demand a fitter. Funnily enough they are the ones that will not budge untill dead on 15mins has passed on tacho. One even had a night out 5 mins from the yard as he ran out of time!
Cannot remember the last time I did checks. I’m probably lazy - but I just don’t bother anymore.
Bites me in the bum sometimes. I used to not bother with the trailer brakes when uncoupling. Until I had the embarrassment of pulling one off a bay and being chased down to put it back on after realising they had disabled the auto brake when you disconnect the red line.
That being said… today I had to do a trailer swap with another driver in a bus lane in London (company will pay fines if we are caught) as he was running out of hours. Am I really expected to sit there and wait if the spray suppression is missing or damaged? Or an indicator bulb is out? Easy to slag me as a cowboy for doing that way - but I’m on pharma work and if the stuff don’t get delivered to the hospitals operations don’t happen.

Funny enough you say that.I changed a fuse for the wipers the other day and got a bollocking from fleet.I then billed them £300 for it.He tried to sing a different tune i just said i will pull my fuse out and you can call the dealer.

I had similar in a Travis Perkins, guy had a wee computer that told him how long to spend on each part
You’ll be lucky if I show 4 minutes in the morning, spark up a regal, make sure tyres are still round and still stuck to the rest of it, make sure nothings been nicked and that the lights light up, away we go.

Mixed feelings on that one mate.
I realise stopping 5 mins short is a bit stupid in real terms and all the rest of it, but THEY make the rules not us!
Fri night, wanting to get home?
I reckon I’d wangle it.
Through the week?
Hmmmm…if I get back to yard and it’s a bit too late to get home I don’t get paid a night out, so I’d make sure I was more than 5 mins away, to justify parking up.
The guy who parked up should have done similar, but to ridicule him?
Not unless his spreadover was up, as opposed to only his driving time, in which case he could have been picked up, or walked to the yard ffs.
Another aspect to it…Highly unlikely I know, but anything could happen in those 5 mins running in, from getting silent checked (do they actually still do that btw? ) to a similar scenario to the one beside Heathrow the other night.
If you wrote on your printout ‘‘Only 5 mins from depot so carried on’’… not a REAL or valid excuse I’d reckon, so DVSA would not wear it, (Unless of course he had been held up in an RTA, and/or carrying a valuable load that needs secure parking or something similar)
Would your firm and their compliance types back you?..
I doubt it, and definitely NOT in my own case.
So I reckon he done the right thing, but could maybe have handled it a bit better.

fire it up,look at the lights ,check the back doors or seal, have a ■■■■■■■■ check the pin handle and thats about it.
anything more than 5 mins max is beancounting ,inexperience or ignorance of reality for the sake of it.
Anyone remember the official vosa walk round video where some clown was doing it demonstrating to some blonde woman? At one point you can clearly see the trailer height on the front, yet when they get in the cab and he finishes in there then declares he’s ready to go out on the road when the height marker just above his head is way out!
To be fair to drivers who don’t change light bulbs it may not be that they don’t know how but that the company doesn’t want them to do it. My last company didn’t want the driver touching anything, not bulbs, not wipers, nothing.
I was firmly put in my place the first day I started with them, I went to my tractor and did something I’ve done since I started driving and that was pull out the dipstick and check the engine oil. Seeing it was down to just above the MIN mark I asked the garage for some oil but was told that’s where they want the level and leave the oil checking to them. So they don’t even want, I my opinion, the driver doing one of the most basic checks. Don’t think you can blame the driver when he/she complies with company policy and doesn’t want to get into trouble.
And well done to that young lady driver, so what if she’s using a clipboard she wants to do the job right. And todays protective clothing has taken the place of overalls that we used to wear and who didn’t like wearing them.

Know what you mean mate but im talking 3 miles from the yard!
We work for a firm that looks after us so in return I have the view of not taking the ■■■■ and to go the extra mile when needed.

Not all of us work for the fleet firms. 12 wagons at our place and we are allowed to change bulbs, top up fluids and do running repairs to get back to the workshop.
So when I see one of ours taking the wagon around to the workshop just to change a tail light that requires just 2 screws to be undone to replace, then I truly despair.
